Posted: Sep 9, 2008 12:25 PM

I just installed itunes 8 over my itunes 7 on Vista.

Now whenever I plug in my ipod nano, I get a blue screen death. 3 times so far. even if it is plugged in on boot, I get a blue screen.

Before itunes 8 I never seen a blue screen with vista since it came out.

I don't use any of those devices, and I tried to create a new account and the same thing happened.

The file causing the BSOD is usbaapl64.sys, and it happens when it is installing the device drivers for the iPhone.

Same problem except with the iphone 3g I agree that a BSOD is rare and is my first ever on vista.

I think it's safe to say then that either Apple's USB driver shipped with iTunes 8 is broken on Vista, or it's causing a problem with some other common Vista driver.

Are you guys both using the 64-bit edition of Windows Vista?

Also remember to check with your manufacturers to see if there are updated drivers for other devices on your computers. This may help rectify the problem. For Dell (since one of you has an XPS), go to http://support.dell.com and enter the service tag of your laptop and update any hardware driver that's available for you.

I'm getting this same problem with my iPod Classic. I have 32 bit Vista Home Premium. Apple better fix soon. Is there a link I can report this to?

What is this "royb" address. is it something trustworthy?

Everyone should go to http://bugreport.apple.com and report this issue. This obviously is a huge deal and needs to be fixed ASAP.

You need an ADC account to post bugs but its free to signup. Everyone who has this issue really should post a bug report. This WILL get their attention!

I have the same problem. Installed iTunes 8. Hooked up my iPhone3G and blue screen of death twice in a row. Always worked flawlessly before iTunes 8.

yes, rob seems to be a real apple employee.

He has sent two emails back to me about his issue.

I sent him 3 dump files and 1 dxdiag of my system.

I think they realize how serious this flaw is.

I'm having the exact same problem with my iPod Touch. Never had a BSOD before. Have to restore from a Vista "restore point" to be able to use my PC again. Won't even boot up in SAFE MODE after it crashes during the iTunes installation.
