No HD TV Shows?!?

Seriously??!!
The premiere HD device in Apple's lineup and you can't purchase the HD TV shows through it?
Who thought this would be a good idea?!
Fine, I can purchase the HD TV shows through iTunes 8 and watch them on my computer, but I don't want to watch my movies and TV shows on my computer. That's why I don't bother with Hulu or any of the other network streaming shows that are in near HD quality already. I want to watch TV on my TV. That's why I bought an AppleTV. Please please please, tell me that there will be an imminent update for the AppleTV that turns on the ability to download HD TV shows. What's the point in this box otherwise. Sheesh, it should have been turned on at the same time as iTunes 8 was released.

You can always sync them to the tv. Yes it likely requires an update of some kind, but it's not a particular hardship to engage in the workaround for the time being.

I'm not sure why you can't purchase HD TV shows directly from the ATV, but there could be a couple of reasons. One is that it may require another ATV software update before it has that capability (if that's the case, it's probably in the works but late, as was the 2.0 upgrade).
Another reason could be disk space and device issues. When you purchase an HD TV show from iTunes you get both an SD (for iPods) and an HD version (which, at least in my case, is the one that syncs to the ATV). Downloading an entire season of both SD and HD versions of the same episodes to a 40GB ATV would likely run afoul of the capacity issue rather quickly.

Perhaps Apple doesnt want to roll out software across all platforms at the same time like they did last time with the iPhone / iPod / MobileMe issues. I suspect and update will come soon.

I am glad I am not alone on this -I just discovered the lack of any of the HD TV shows on my ATV!!!! - I downloaded a free episode of Battlestar on iTunes - it gives me both formats on there, but it syncs the lower res on to my Apple TV - what the ****!?!?
**** - now thats logical! :]

Has anyone seen if Apple says anywhere on their website or in the ITMS that HD shows downloaded on a computer cannot be synced to an TV and that only the standard format can be synced?
I feel ripped off. I didn't want two versions of the same show. I just wanted HD on my TV. If I would have known that I couldn't sync the HD format. I wouldn't have bothered trying to download them to my 'puter and would have been fine with just getting the standard format straight from the TV.
This just stinks Apple.

Of the HD TV shows I've bought so far, both an HD and SD version downloaded, but only the HD version synced to the ATV, with the SD version syncing to my iTouch. I haven't had any problems with HD TV shows not syncing once they've downloaded.
There is a problem with HD video not downloading from the iTunes store, however, that is reportedly due to a bug in iTunes 8. I ran into this one yesterday. After selecting some HD TV shows in the iTunes store, I discovered that only the SD versions were being added to the shopping cart, except in one case where the TV show was indicated as HD, but only the SD version downloaded.
Apparently, the work around for this bug is to turn on 1-click buy in the iTunes store preferences and also make sure that "Allow Multiple Downloads" is enabled in iTunes. Apple is reportedly aware of this bug and is working on a fix for it.

That's strange. When I look in the "TV Shows" library on the iTunes app on my MacBook Pro, i can see both the standard format shows and the HD shows. There is a little TV looking icon for the standard format shows and the letters "HD" for the Hi Def versions. When I go to the "TV Shows" library under the TV folder that shows up in iTunes, I see the shows I supposedly bought in HD synced but they just have the little TV looking icon and not the HD icon. So... I don't think the HD shows are syncing to my TV, just the standard ones. Are you sure the HD shows synced to yours? How did you get it to do it if they did?
ALSO,
Last night, I tried to watch some of these new shows I bought. I could see them all at first and watched the first one. But then, when I went back to the menu to watch the next one, they were all gone except for one, even the show I just watched was gone. I am also seeing that the TV keeps resyncing on my computer. What's up with that. I'm leaving it all on and syncing today to see if it all just works itself out.

I don't pay much attention to the ATV file list in iTunes, so I haven't checked to see what icons are displayed for the episodes that are synced, but the HD episodes I've bought so far were obviously HD when I watched them via my ATV. There is a significant difference in image quality between the iTunes SD videos and HD videos, so there should be no doubt as to what you're watching when you watch it.
Make sure your ATV hard disk has enough free space for the HD episodes to sync. Depending on the sync settings you have set for it in iTunes and the amount of free space on the ATV drive, HD shows may not automatically sync. Also, if you have it set to sync only unwatched videos, they'll disappear from the sync menu once you've watched them.

I had this problem, too, and wrote about it in another thread.

Did they disappear from iTunes or just the ATV menu? My ATV hard drive is full, so if my iTunes library is offline I only see the files that are actually synced. If my iTunes library is online I see everything that's available (both synced and ready for streaming from the library).
I know from reading other threads that there are some significant bug issues with iTunes 8, but I haven't had any problems with files disappearing from my iTunes library once they've downloaded successfully. I have had problems getting the correct files to actually download from the iTunes store, however.

OK, so Apple TV now indicates which shows are in HD, and also no longer syncs both the HD and SD version of some shows from iTunes; However, rather than synching just the high def version, my Apple TV only seems to be synching the standard def version.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Is there a way to fix / work around it?
