Color me VERY happy.
I'm VERY happy to report that 2.1 seems to have resolved ALL of my 3G issues. I even have 3-4 bars in places where there was no signal before (read..dead) and I am able to browse with excellent speed. I've gotten approximately a 20-30 db signal increase according to the service mode signal strength.
All in all, I'm happy, happy, happy I would expect the battery life should be much improved going forward. I'll know if 3-4 days.
Backup now takes all of 30 seconds. I didn't have any key/speed issues before the update so I can't speak to that (I leave my key click sounds off though, which could be a factor).
Browsing speed is MUCH improved of course.

Same here, there's a thread stating that 2.1 firmware didn't solve any of they're problems however i now can browse at 3G speeds (715kbps) before with 2.02 i had to disable the 3G chip to even use WIFI or EDGE this is a massive improvement. I'm receiving Full tower in 3G in conshohocken, Pennsylvania which is outside philadelphia

4-5 bars outside where previously I had 2, and 2 bars inside where previously I had 0-1. I don't care if they just re-calibrated bars or whatever, as long as it work, and so far it seems to.

But is the connection stable?
I too now get 4 bars where previously I was getting 0 or 1, but the phone drops straight from 4 bars 3G down to GPRS after a few moments use.
This is purely a cosmetic fix. The connection is just as weak and unreliable as before.

For what it's worth, my signal strength in my office went from the -101-93 range to -95-87 after the update. The indicator isn't showing 3G, though. Not sure what all this means....

If it wasn't showing 3G it was probably showing either your GSM signal strength.

I think in terms of signal reception the problem was the iPhone was improperly measuring the strength, maybe like it was uncalibrated or something.
When they say they've made the accuracy better of the display, it wouldn't surprise me if that also meant that the phone was more accurate and detecting useful 3G signal.
Either way, my signal is better bar-wise, as well as in use.
Now they just need to fix the GPS

Well mines appears to be less accurate. I get a 4 bar signal that drops to GPRS if I try to use it, indicating that the phone had never acquired a useful signal in the first place.
The iPhone is far from fixed.

yea i'm gonna have to test the battery life, but i'll be doing that on Monday as day 1 since I know that before 2.1 my battery would go up to thursday. 4 days heh? well on the iphone standby times says 3 days somewhat hours. usage. i managed to get over 10 hours on my last charge. So definitely there should be a improved battery life.

Before 2.1, with 3g off, I was getting 3.5 hours of usage and 3-4 days standby.
My signal strength is up by 20 dB, so it's definitely stronger. This isn't simply adjusting the bars to make it look stronger. The signal strength is strong.
