Battery life substantially worse after 2.1 firmware update

I used to get very acceptable battery life prior to the 2.1 update. I am on 3g all day in the office, frequent usage, and I always get a full day, comprising 8+ hours total, and 4-5 hours active usage. I updated to 2.1 at around noon today, and by 3:30, with the total time indicator, displaying 3:18mins, I got the 20% remaining battery indicator. The interesting thing to note is I didn't use the phone for the full 3.5 hours straight! Normally standby and usage would be dramatically different, with standby being a much bigger number than usage - but now, my usage and standby are only off by 1 minute!
In any case, my battery life appears to be less than half of what I had prior to the upgrade - this was the main feature I was interested in, way to bork that one Apple!

I have no idea if my update will make battery better or worse, I just wanted to say nice use of the word "bork" in a sentence.

It may be that with the upgrade the phone and the battery need to recalibrate. I may be worth running the phone down to after the 10% remaining message when it turns off and won't restart until recharged to recalibrate. That's if you haven't tried this already.

I think something was running in the background and killed your usage. I would restore and try again.

How could this be, since the iPhone does not support background processing?

iPhone supports background processing - how else does the time and date get updated, mails checked, SMS messages received, calendar events notified, iPod music played, and phone calls received, all while the phone is 'off' or you are doing other things with it?
Background processing is not supported for third-party applications.

Right, I should have been more precise. However, the hypothesis was that something was running in the background which drained the battery. The first mark against this hypothesis is that my battery life was fine prior to the 2.1 upgrade, and I didn't change any settings post upgrade. Let's assume that the 2.1 upgrade changed something without my knowledge - so let's go through the items you mentioned:
- Time and Date: these were set to "Set Automatically" before the upgrade, so maybe Apple has changed the frequency and this is burning battery? In any case, this would still qualify as "worse after upgrade"
- Calendar events: I have no notifications today, so this likely isn't the problem, unless, again Apple is checking for notifications more frequently, which would again qualify as "worse after upgrade"
- ipod: this wasn't running in the backgroud, it was off for the full 3:18 between full charge and 20% warning, so likely not responsible
- phone calls: I had 3 < 2 minute calls on it in the 3:18 between full charge and 20% warning. Likely not responsible, unless 3G is using waaay more juice
So, this still appears to be worse battery life after upgrade.

Its also possible that something glitched during the update, causing a process to run in the background and use the battery faster.

That seems unlikely, especially given that I've shut down, and restarted the device. If it were a glitch that persevered after a reboot, that would qualify as a "feature" of the 2.1 update. Then again, I don't see anyone else with the problem yet so, guess we'll wait and see if this is pervasive or just my issue for now. Worst case I'll try a restore, but am not relishing that.
I can mention, in terms of oddities, the backup prior to applying the update took over an hour, which I thought was pretty hilarious, given that the other "big" feature in the update was faster backups - maybe I'm just cursed

Haha. What I'm saying is that when the update installed a piece of code that turns an app off might have been damaged. Rebooting wouldn't fix the code.

That is a big feature of the update. However, that backup occurred before the update was installed. No software, to my knowledge, has the power to implement a change before the patch is applied.

Doh - you're right, though I sort of assumed that the backup speedup was a function of iTunes 8.0 and firmware 2.1. Regarding the glitch, who knows, maybe...

I also just got the 20% battery warning. It had a full charge before the update (at 8:30 AM) and I listened to music on the way to work - 45 minutes tops, but the usage says 5 hrs. My iPhone has been running NONSTOP since the update.
I just did a reboot and plugged it in. Hopefully this will be a one time event.

This is a big indication that something is running when you don't expect it. Could be hung checking mail?
Is your phone warm? Higher than normal temps are also a sign...

well after coming home and jacking in to my regular iTunes library and doing a sync the situation seems to be better. I've got two plus hours of usage and I'm only down about a quarter battery. That said my usage and standby are still exactly the same which denotes some kind of problem. Anybody else see the same usage and standby times?

Yes. I have exactly the same problem. I've been poking at this for many hours now.
I've reset the phone to factory settings and restored from a backup. That was no help.
Now, I've reset the phone to factory settings and just finished manually reentering most of my settings.
While manually restoring my settings, I ran into trouble getting my MS Exchange account to work. "Can not get mail" (or similar). I tried a workaround posted in one of the other threads to get it to work (no limit on synced messages), but it'll never stop downloading/syncing. Do you, by any chance, also have an Exchange account? I think it could be what's causing the reduced battery life.
For now, I've just deleted my iphone's exchange account. It's running cooler and the Usage time is diverging from the standby time.
Sigh.
