2.1 No Service
Posted: Sep 13, 2008 12:33 PM

After upgrading to 2.1, I lost connectivity in my apartment which is located in Washington DC. Previously, I had 3G reception. Rather than switching to EDGE, my iPhone displays "No Service". Only after turning 3G off does my phone connect to ATT's EDGE network. The ATT customer representative I spoke to said they are receiving calls from others who have similar issues after upgrading to 2.1. Ultimately I was transfered to Apple's Tech support.

EDIT: Same issue seen here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1708621&tstart=0

Interestingly, despite ATT saying they were reporting outages within 10 miles of DC, I was still transfered to Apple's Tech Support.

So what did AT&T do? Did they send an OTA to your phone? Did they see it on the network? Or did they tell you to have a nice day, and to fill out the survey about your support call?

I have had the same problem here in NYC. Worked fine in my apartment until I upgraded to 2.1 (other than the slow 3G which others have experienced). Now I have either No service, or I have 5 bars for a minute and then back to No service. Did you contact Apple?

No, they put me on hold a couple times. I explained the situation. They asked if I had installed the software update and if the issues occurred after the update. They confirmed tower issues too. I'm not completely convinced yet that this is caused by 2.1 since WiFi and EDGE still work.

I think you should call AT&T back, from a different phone. They will ask you at a point to turn off your iPhone. They will confirm the IMEI for your phone, and then send an OTA update to your phone. Good luck!

I have the same problem, but I'm in Mexico and my carrier is Telcel.

So I think that it's likely to be an issue with the firmware, not the carrier.

I'm also having this problem (in NYC). I updated to 2.1 last night and saw much improvement after that. It started with the No Service thing this afternoon - in my apartment, smack in the middle of Manhattan and where I always have a signal.
Sometimes I get all 5 bars of signal, but never for more than a second.

I turned off G3 in settings for about 30 minutes. When I turned it back on, I got 3G service and it has been fine (although I can't get any data - maps, weather, stocks - working on that problem next). If you turn off G3, you will get EDGE, and you won't get the "No Signal" anymore. Good luck.

your are not alone. I also see the same thing here in Asia.
signal came back after reboot. Switching to 2G and 3G is not done in timely manner and sometimes ended up with NO SERVICE. I don't think it is the telco problem. it is the phone.

See my screenshots here. This is taken yesterday, in the full strength 3G signal area.

that's true, but it defeat the purpose of getting a 3G enabled phone.
I bought the phone because of the faster data transfer rate with 3G.

I have the same problem in Mexico.

I have two iPhones (one with firmware 2.02 and the other one with firmware 2.1) and this issue is only showing up in firmware 2.1

I don't think it is a hardware problem (and obviously it's not a network problem) since this happend after installing the new firmware.

I'm wondering if turning off 3G support it's apple's way to improve battery life...

I'm getting 3G only intermittently since 2.1, and when I get it, it is VERY slow (.11 Mbps last time around--same or worse than Edge!) I've had some relatively short periods of No Service as well.

I am in NYC and am having the same problem now too-- right after I updated to 2.1. It definitely has something to do with the update. My phone was working find on 3G before the update. Now it just shows no signal and I can't make a call! What the ****? I wish I could roll back to 2.0.2 or whatever it was before until they fix this issue. The reason that I updated is because I was having some stability issues, now I can't use 3G at all. I am shocked at how bad these issues that Apple is having. I feel like we are dealing with Microsoft... Anyone find a fix for this? Apple please help!!!!
