I'm getting more bars but the 3G signal still drops down to GPRS after a couple of minutes, i.e. no improvement over previous releases.

I'm still having the issue of it showing 3G when I'm not using the network, and then immediately switching to Edge as soon as I try to do anything that does access it. It's just that now it claims to have five bars of 3G instead of three before it fails to actually work . . . :/

Reception has been greatly improved in my case. I not upset anymore having to pay for 3G. It actually works for me now.
Also I noticed that the transition from Edge to 3G is very smooth, no dropped calls, not interruption of data flow.
Very awesome.

OK, let me play devils advocate. Could it be possible, surely not, no way? That the fix doesn't fix anything but makes it look like it does. I noticed whilst 5 bars on 3G, the safari page (MY yahoo) took quite a while to load and then suddenly, it was no bars and then edge.. After the page loaded, within a minute, I was back to 4 bars 3G ????
Now, that's weird. Did someone say conspiracy?
We need someone to run some performance tests, I'm not buying it and I'm the new kid with an Iphone after holding out for the 2.1 release and fan fare!

Interesting point!
I don't think that it is possible to fix a major hardware problem with software.
The 3G must be recalled.

While I don't think the 2.1 update did much with reception sensitivity, I believe it did improve call handoffs. It's also a bit naive to say that software updates cannot fix hardware problems. Everything is combination of software and hardware. My iMac has pretty much the same software as a Dell running Vista. It seems like installing a new operating system makes a pretty big difference.
These recall demands I think are bit much. This is not to say that the iPhone has best the reception of all 3G phones. I doubt it does. But I also doubt it has the worst reception. People experiencing problems are in spotty areas. Maybe not spotty areas as defined by AT&T, but none the less spotty. Otherwise, my performance is solid as is many other people's. Just as it would be presumptive of me to tell someone that is having reception problem that they don't, it's just as presumptive to tell people who have no problem that their handset actually needs a recall.

Dong I'm not in a spotty area. I live and work in areas with strong comprehensive 3G coverage. Other phones appear to have no problem getting a 3G signal here.
I now have a phone that claims four bars of 3G coverage but can't use them, dropping to GPRS after a minute or two of use. Once it has dropped to GPRS it never switches back to 3G. I have to switch 3G off and on again to get another minute of poor 3G connectivity - in areas with strong 3G coverage.
I really think it's time people started talking about the hardware. This is the fourth version of the software and now it's even worse because not only is the reception poor, the signal indicator is completely misleading as well.

If you have a deffective chip (like the 3G) there is NO sotware to fix that. If the hardware does not work, it is naive to believe that software can fix it!
We all know that the problem is the one chip, no matter what you do you can fix it, it need to be replaced.
Your computer's hardware if fine, therefore any improvement in the sotware will make it work better, but what if your hardrive stops working, then what? do you think that a software can fix it? you'll need a new drive, period!
The Iphone 3G should be recalled!

So what about people like me that are not having any problems with their iphone? After 2.1 my 3G connections are much more stable. My signal strength is about the same in my house but it seems the the quailty is better. I can do things on 3G like streaming music and surfing that I wasn't able to do before.
I know that there are a lot of people having problems and I also know there are alot of people that are not. So I'm not sure if it's hardware, software, service provider, or all of the above.

I did see a slight improvement in signal strength until the hurricane came through ohio yesterday and now I only get one bar of edge while standing outside.
