Font display problem after updating to 10.5.5

After updating to 10.5.5, I have an identical font problem on two different machines: an iMac and a Macbook. The problem concerns font display on the screen and only occurs when viewing PDF files using Leopard's built-in facilities. So the problem shows up in Preview and in Safari, but not when viewing the same file in Adobe Acrobat. (There's also no problem with the same font in MS Word.)
The problem: Many italic characters in Times New Roman Italic display with (more or less) vertical strokes are rendered very thin. The result is a bizarre, distracting effect. The result is particularly noticeable with lowercase "o", but is widespread. I don't have the same problem with plain Times. It's possible other fonts have this too -- I haven't checked them all -- but most don't.
The problem appears to be related to anti-aliasing. When I turn this off in Preview, the display is of course not pretty, but the problem is otherwise entirely gone. (Times New Roman text and Times text now look basically the same.)
I've tried obvious things along the way: reinstalling the font from the system disk, flushing the font cache, etc. even reinstalling the 10.5.5 combo update. Nothing helps.
Any suggestions?
(Here is a PDF file on the web that has this problem for me -- in case you want to check whether you have it too: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/linguistics/LaTrobePapersinLinguistics/Vol%2009/07Popovic.pdf. Nothing special about this file, though. Any PDF in Times New Roman with italics has the problem for me.)

Try validating your fonts through font book.

same problem here. I validated my fonts and I have a ton of small problems with system fonts. replacing them now. will see if that fixes the issue. I suggest you do the same.

Yes, I tried that too, thanks. The font checks out fine. And to judge from the comments of others, I'm not the only one with this problem.

dpdpdp et al . . .
Have you all checked for duplicates of the problem font???
If you do a "find" on Times New Roman Italic, how many show up???
And please, stay away from the System Fonts . . . Trust me, I know.
(Made a bunch of serious mistakes like that in the past.)
Check and let us know, OK, guys???

Boy, I'm hoping Kurt will come in here,
but the page linked shows up perfect on my iMac.
I have yet to update to 10.5.5. I'm at 10.5.4.
But for you guys, what the h*ll?
I'll be back after I update.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have no duplicates -- and only one Times New Roman Italic in particular.

that document displays fine in Preview on my mac pro at work (it's on 10.5.4) but I really don't think it's because of 10.5.5. fairly sure it's a font issue.

Updated now.
Whew!
That page shows fine in both Preview & Adobe PDF.
Sorry if I missed this, but are you seeing this anomaly on other sites, as well?

I'm seeing it in every PDF document (including ones I create myself) that uses Times New Roman Italic -- so long as the document is being displayed in Preview or Safari. (Adobe Acrobat looks fine, as I mentioned earlier.)
