Will Apple respond to fetch/push not working properly
Posted: Sep 22, 2008 12:00 PM

I am on my 2nd iPhone (the original met a puddle it didn't like and I'm not on a 3G).
Mail fetch/push does not work. By that I mean, will not get mail on schedule.
I have Gmail, ME, 1 IMAP and 1 POP account.
If the phone is plugged into the wall outlet (charging) it will execute its schedule.
Otherwise the phone does not get mail unless I do it manually.

Unfortunately the phone is 65 days old and I have no way of getting my money back. I am not the only one with a problem.

What will Apple do when they won't even acknowledge its a problem? Their online chat people have clueless and the folks (genii) in the store will at best swap the phone out. Guess what - it happens on the new phones too.

Suggestions?

The Gmail account will not Push, the IMAP can if it is an Exchange server or Yahoo, and the POP will not Push. Set your iPhone to fetch every 15 minutes and see what happens. I only have the MM account and it is pushing mail just fine, as well as synching my calendar.

My 2.1 iPhone is not pushing mail for me using MobileMe, and there is no auto checking of my IMAP Gmail if on suspend using battery - all since 2.1. Many others are experiencing this.

Me too, since 2.1 no push from either MobileMe or my work Exchange server, unless I check manually!

Same here. Since installing 2.1 (I can't use the term "upgrade") fetch doesn't work for any IMAP connections. Set for 15 minutes it will only check for mail if the screen is on.

Even manually checking is slow. Sometimes I have to exit mail and check stocks or something then go back into mail before it will work.

2.1 is junk. I could get the same battery life out of 2.0.2 if I shut down everything like 2.1 does. Anyone know if it is possible to downgrade it back to 2.0?

Can't speak to Gmail since I don't use it, but my Push mail on MM is working, on both my iPhone with 2.1 and my Touch with 2.1 and my friends iPhone push on Yahoo is working with 2.1, but I have seen that others have been having problems.

Can you confirm that you are receiving push email notifications (vibrate, chime, etc.) while your phone is on battery (not plugged in) and suspended/sleeping (screen is off), using the cell phone network and not WiFi?

Yes I can, received one calendar update that I made on my desktop at home, one contact entered on the laptop and currently showing 3 email, that vibrated and sounded the email tone when they came in. And all while on battery.

I seem to receive calendar and contact updates, but no auto email updates, whether push or IMAP.

Was your phone suspended when you got the email notifications?

I was able to get it to work by turning push off/on or turning airplane mode on/off, but after a while it stops working.

What does suspended mean?

I have had occasions, both prior to and with 2.1, where I have forgotten to turn my phone off then on (or reset it) and no emails were forthcoming (nor were any calls, texts, etc.). This is also happened with my Treo 650 and I learned to "reboot" it daily to reconnect with the GSM network.

Suspended means the phone has timed out from no usage and gone to sleep (dark screen), or you press the top button after using it.

In suspend mode, the phone is on, but the screen is turned off and the touch screen is disabled to save power.

You should receive notifications in suspend mode (calendar, alerts, email, and obviously phone calls) but with 2.1 we are finding that the emails are not getting checked. We press the top or home button, and no new emails appear. Going into Mail to manually check finally loads them.

I seriously doubt they are ignoring anyone, but it makes it difficult to diagnose the problem when some people, with 2.1, are not having the issue (and I'd guess this is the majority) and others are. You take the risk that if you put out a "fix" for a small group you break it for everyone else.
