Scrolling Distortion in web browsers
Posted: Oct 16, 2008 11:41 AM

Just grabbed a new MBP yesterday and so far everything is great. The only strange thing that I have noticed is that when I am scrolling thru web pages there is some distortion or tearing on the screen in the browser window.

It is not always in the same location and seems to have nothing to do with the windows position on the screen. Has anyone seen this on their units? I am guessing that this is some issue with the screen and I should take it back.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Same problem here. So, it's not the display or specific to your unit. Seems like a software glitch in the srceen refresh. I also see a 'blinking' in powerwpoint when typing in text. Hopefully a software fix will come out for this.

Anyone else seeing similar issues?

Looks like that could be it. I was at the Apple store this evening and the tech did see the issue. Of course he then went to all the display models on the floor and they all seemed to show the same issue. Certainly not great to hear when you just dropped this much cash on the machine.

I certainly hope that it is something that can be fixed easily.

If you get a chance give this a try..

Scroll using the depressed button and scroll bar on the side.. This seems to cause the issue for me.

Now try scrolling using just the mutlitouch function. It seemed to dissapear on my unit when I do not push the button.

This is certainly odd.. Also the fact that the display units did the same thing was not thrilling.

I get the distortion too. It seems a software issue since it doesn't appear when browsing in a WIndows browser using Bootcamp.

This happens on the new MacBook as well. There is also tearing in HD videos on Vimeo. This does not happen on my MacBook Air (Intel Graphics). I believe it is related to the Nvidia chipset. My MacPro with the 8800GT exhibits similar symptoms (scrolling and video) and they haven't fixed it in over 6 months. I wouldn't hold my breath for a fix to the MacBook or MacBook Pro.

I was going to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro when I went in to exchange my new MacBook (for non-related cosmetic issues). Now I think I'll just return the new MacBook and live with my MacBook Air and it's noisy fan.

Just wanted to add that I've discovered that if you go full screen on flashed based web videos the tearing does not occur. It also doesn't occur on Slingbox Player or Quicktime Player. I can live with this and may pick up a MacBook Pro now after all.

Experiencing exactly the same issues as described here. Very strange effect, like a wave distorting the text during scrolling - either to do with screen refresh rates or graphics processor drawing. Pretty poor for a premium model from a premium brand like Apple.

My screen, I discovered from one of the other threads, is a Chi Mei. The new Pros either have a screen manufactured by Chi Mei (a low brow Chinese brand) or LG/Samsung. I discovered that my panel part is 9C85 using Coloursync Utility to find out. The LG/Samsung panel is 9C84. People have commented that the 9C85 is yellower and is not as color vibrant as the 9C84. However, both are much better than the new Macbook panels, which a number of people, myself included, have returned for the Pros. Now I find that there are issues with the Pro screens too.

It is a lottery as to which screen you get in your model. You could like the one in store, only to purchase the computer and find out that it is not what you remember. Even though Apple probably requires that they all be made to certain spec, you can easily imagine that using different parts suppliers is going to end up with a similar, but essentially different product for one half of users. Let's face it - we buy TVs from one manufacturer over another because of the quality of the LCD panel. Here, what we think we are buying, may not necessarily be the case. Give me a Japanese manufactured panel any day. Then, a Korean one. The last thing I would want is a bloody Chinese-made panel. That's what I've got.

Imagine if Apple substituted CPUs? Why should the panels be any different? There are some components that you just can't compromise on - the screen is absolutely one of those. I tell you, if there was an alternative, I'd be out, after my recent experiences with these new Macbooks and Pros.

I wonder if the scrolling issue comes down to the brand of panel used in particular users MBPs?

I get the screen 'tearing' effect on my MacBook, its very bad when grabbing the scroll bar, is this likely to be a software or hardware issue?

Yep - exactly the same problem. I'm going to install Vista using Bootcamp tonight to see if this is a Mac OS screen driver issue.

If it is, looks like I'll be living in a Windows world on my Mac until Apple gets this rectified.

Hi John,

I can state that I believe the issue is a driver/harware issue. I have been browsing in Windows Vista, and it appears, that in the mother of all ironies, that the Windows/Vista drivers seem to work much better with the Nvidia architecture than than the Mac OS X drivers. The tearing effect does not seem apparent.

I am much happier with my screen in Vista. It now looks and 'feels' right.

I read somewhere else on the forum that Nvidia has never really properly developed its drivers for Mac OS X. Here's hoping that with the closer relationship that Apple seems to have developed with them, that we will be getting the very best from both Apple and Nvidia in the future.

For now, I am going to be using Vista on my Macbook Pro as my primary OS.

I will only use OS X for GarageBand.

Hi,

I believe it is a software issue to do with all applications that use Apple's WebKit.

There is a means of speeding up the display called Coalesced Updates, see this technical note.
http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2005/tn2133.html

I had this problem on a previous MacBook Pro and thought it was related to the NVidia Issue.
My new MacBook Pro also has the issue.

It happens in Firefox which also uses WebKit. There is a setting in the Firefox pList file and if you set it to NO it will remove the problem from Firefox, however I believe it slows down the rendering process (you may not notice).
It is clearly a symptom of the persuit of speed.

Now, if you use opera, which does not use WebKit, the problem does not exist.

The option to change a setting in the pList file does not exist in Safari.

Please do not panic that it is a hardware fault. When I spoke with a Genius he looked it up on their Apple support pages. It is listed but there is currently not a solution.

All the best

While I think it is possible that it could be a webkit issue, I am not convinced that this is the case. When I did a clean install of Vista pre SP1 and any additional web/driver updates, the tearing issue was present in IE 7 using the preinstalled generic drivers. After all updates had been completed, the problem was gone.

Apple Support article TA27218 'Mac OS X: Video distortion when scrolling through windows' refers to this problem, although the article was last modified in August 2007.

Thanks for posting this. I am writing this to you in the full glory of the new Macbook Pro screen in Windows Vista, which appears to be the only place that yo will get to experience your new Macbook Pro screen, in ALL its glory. It is somewhat gobsmacking that Apple has not addressed this issue in all this time...

Seriously, it is a bizzare situation to say the least. Up until this point, I was quite disappointed in my new screen. What is even more ridiculous, is that Safari for Windows does not exhibit the same problems that it exhibits in OS X on the Macbook Pro!!!

It really is hard to believe...
