Bluetooth issue...
Posted: Oct 21, 2008 8:03 AM

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue? I just got the MacBook in the mail yesterday, and played around with it at work for a bit. When I got home, I also showed it off to a few people of course. When everyone left, I started to install my Bluetooth Wacom tablet. After the initial installation disk, I couldn't find my Bluetooth settings in System Preferences or anything in System Profiler.

1. Did a reboot of the machine with no effect.
2. Figured it was the Wacom disk, so did a system restore, with no effect.
3. Ran Hardware Diagnostics (Boot "D"), and didn't see the bluetooth adapter in Hardware Profile.

Just got off the phone with Apple, and of course, when I booted up the Laptop it showed up. So, I quickly ordered up an AppleCare plan. My guess would be overheating, since I was playing around with the MacBook all day long. It's a shame I didn't notice whether it worked right off from the start.

I too am having Bluetooth issues. Mine are related to using a Bluetooth mouse. It works fine until I close the lid to use an external monitor, then the mouse stops working and System Preferences locks up. It has occurred both with a microsoft Bluetooth mouse and the Apple Wireless mouse.

After I go to Bluetooth settings and try to turn off Bluetooth I get the spinning circular rainbow cursor thet doesn't stop. I need to Force Quite System Preferences. I need to restart and sometimes it takes 2 restarts to get Bluetooth working again in System Preferences.

I'm seeing the same thing.. When resuming from sleep with an external monitor plugged in, most of the time when it awakes from bluetooth (keyboard or mouse), I get a spinning beachball, and have to reboot 2 or 3 times before things work again.

VERY annoying.

Same problem here! I thought resetting PRAM was helping, but now I realize it might be the external monitor that's the problem.

Has anyone called Apple about this and gotten an answer other than to reboot without the monitor?

My new MacBook's bluetooth icon and hardware have "disappeared" from System Profiler. I had added an Apple Wireless Mighty House to the machine. Was working fine. Then it stopped working. Couldn't see the bluetooth icon in the menu bar. Went to System Profiler and it indicated that no Bluetooth hardware was detected. This is pretty poor performance. I'm still in my return period so I'll take it to them and get it swapped.

Does zapping PRAM bring it back?

Happy to try. How do I do that? And why should I have to do that? Never had to do that on any of my Macs before...

Is this on a clean system - no non-Apple software installed? There are some possible issues with VMware and other software which may install drivers that conflict with BlueTooth. Likewise if you migrated from another Mac.

Resetting PRAM can be done by following these directions.

Let us know, we'll keep working on it.

I did migrate over from another MacBook. So that could be a reason/cause that resetting the PRAM could resolve? I will try when I get home.

Thanks for your help!

Resetting the PRAM will not fix the issue if it is being caused by something that was migrated over. It may fix things if there is corrupted information being stored in PRAM, however. Try resetting first.

This is something of a hassle to do, but to be certain this is a hardware issue, I would suggest erasing and restoring your hard drive to out of the box condition. If you still have an issue after that, it's a hardware problem. Obviously you'll want to make a backup of your data first.

Let us know how it turns out.

I have a fresh install on a new MB, and the same problem occurs. Even after PRAM zap.

The problem (seems) to be that if the MB is connected to an external monitor, it doesn't 'wake' it up after sleep when resumed via BT (hit the keyboard or mouse). If I unplug the monitor from the Mac, and plug it back in, the display then fires up.

stevemak,

Possibly you should start your own thread, since the original poster has not indicated that he has an external display. It's quite difficult to keep everything straight if different people are talking about different issues.

Thanks.

Thank you Laundry Bleach! Resetting the PRAM solved my issue! Once I did the steps and rebooted, the MacBook displayed the Bluetooth icon again and I was able to reconnect the Apple Mighty Mouse. I'll let you know if the problem crops up again.

I appreciate your help.

The thread is titled "Bluetooth issues," my post, the second in the thread came about because I was having problems with my Bluetooth mouse and closed lid mode and an external monitor.

As soon as I closed the lid I lose my Bluetooth connection and my mouse will not bring the MacBook out of sleep mode when using an external display, so I am having the same problem.
