Iphone 3G The connection to the server failed

Help,
I'm recieving the message "The connection to the server failed" I successfully verified the Exchange profile with the OWA server. No error message. However when I go into the Exchange E-mail to sync to gives me the message "the connection to the server failed". I'm running ann Iphone 3G 2.1 on Exchange 2003 SP2. I have hard reset the Iphone, removed the domain name for the profile and even tried to use the Iphone Configuration Web Utility with no luck. I have downloaded the 2 Godaddy Root CA's and 1 intermediate CA to the Iphone. Still no luck. I have played with the Sync options on the phone changing the "mail days to sync" to "No Limit"
Any idea?

Has anyone else seen this issue? I am hoping I'm not the only one.

I have this exact same error. What the heck is going on here? If my information can be verified, why can't I connect to the server?

I am experiencing the same issue. With my deduction, I feel it is my imported certificates, but at this point I have no way to verify.

I am also having the same problem and just cannot find any way around it. iPhone (1st Gen) worked great until the upgrade to 2.1. The Exchange server has not changed and still works fine with Entourage. Is Apple going to fix this SOON!!! Please.... Does anyone know if the 3G iPhone works? It might almost be worth upgrading to fix this.

My issue has been resolved! First I had to install the CA root for my self signed cert by going to https://servername/certsrv/ on my iPhone.
Then I had to follow this Microsoft KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817379
SSL does not play nice with Active Sync. This provides the work around.
Then I had to install a hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916640
This allows Push mail to resume after the SSL Active Sync work around has been evoked.
After these three things were completed, I now have a 100% working Exhange Push / iPhone set up.
I thought I was going to kill myself in frustration trying to figure out the solution. Not to mention I could not find a single location that explained all three magic keys in one simple location.
I hope this helps others.

YES! Validation that I'm not the only one with this problem!
This is the second time this has occurred on my iPhone. First time around, to confirm that it was not a server issue, I configured another 3G iPhone (running 2.1) to my corporate Exchange account and suddenly, my iPhone started to work as well.
Calling Apple, they blamed it on AT&T. Calling AT&T, the blamed it on Apple. Just go the run around.

i solved my problem.
i think i need to get glasses. my exchange server was not sp2, however, i thought i read that the server was required to have sp2. as soon as exchange was updated to sp2, the iphone 3g was able to sync with no problems.
my certificate still says not verified, but i bought my certificate through www.dyndns.com. i know that doesnt mean it is valid, but my point is, i didnt create my own self signed cert on the server.
for anyone still having issues, chances are it is not an apple problem, unless your phone is actually broken, but if that is the case, then i suppose internet wouldnt work on your phone.
for everyone who is still having trouble, post your exchange system manager version number.
open ESM, click help, then about exchange system.
make sure you have version 6.5.7638.1
when i added a reply on here, above, i had version 6.5.7226.0

I went through the same pain and all I had to do is update Exchange to SP2. Thanks to tomdlgns for the post or it would have taken longer to figure out.
Shame on me for not remaining current on SPs.
Happy camper now.

Hello,
I have the same Problem.
I am a German.
I use Iphone 3G Version 2.2 with Exchange Server 2003 SP2.
I can create the Account without any Trouble. but when i go into mail there is always the massage: "E-Mails können nicht empfangen werden. Die Verbindung mit dem Server ist fehlgeschlagen".
I installed all kind of CA's. I tried all kind of settings on the server as well as on the iphone.
Now I have no more idea.
Pleas help me someone.
Thanks a lot.

Great great great
forget about installing certificates and other stuff. The iphone is working great without all those things
Just make sue that exchange on SBS/2003 is at SP2 ( just google sp2 for exchange) and all sync **** is over
- "cannot connect to server"
- Sync is OK but no e-mail on the iphone
Check in the exchange system manager the version. It should be 6.5.7638.1 (SP2)
again thanks to tomdlgns

There is another issue that causes this problem. If you use OWA with forms based authentication, activesync will not work. Here is the fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379
This solved it for me. If you do not administer your exchange server(s), then pass this on to the administrator.

Not a 3G owner, but starting 1/31 --I think with the update to 2.2.1 -- I started receiving "connection to server failed". I've checked with IT and they tell me they have the SP2 package, but w/ certificates. But that is not new. Tried hard reset, deleting account, restoring, changing sync fields terms of storage. Other users on our system seem unaffected, but they likely have not accepted the iphone software update.
