HDMI/HDCP Connection issues
Posted: Nov 5, 2008 1:49 PM

I have an Apple TV, 160gb model. I recently purchase the movie Iron Man from the iTunes store & had no problems viewing it. However, I wanted to watch it again the other day and got an error message that my HDMI connection does not support the content, and that I should try an Component Connection. So far I have tried a updating the software, unplugging both power & HDMI cables, power cycling the TV set, all of which have failed to get rid of this error. I have been able to view TV shows & older Movies that I had purchased without issues, but I am getting rather frustrated with this issue & would be grateful for any new ideas.

Have been having the same problem. Now nothing works with an HDMI cable and have had to move over component video connection. This just doesn't make sense and Apple doesn't seem to want to provide any answers.

I'm Having the same problem. I've downloaded Bones and watched it then went to watch it again and I get the same "Your HDMI does not support HDCP BLAH BLAH..."
I've unplugged everything, I've restarted everything, I've repopulated itunes... No idea what to do next. I only seem to get it on iTunes content that is in HD, I'd understand if I'd never been able to watch it, but not being able to watch content the second time around is just bad!

Continued - Ok I unplugged it and left it for the whole night, restored to factory settings, did all the updates, and even changed HDMI cables. STILL WILL NOT WORK! Also, I downloaded a new episode of a show, just to make sure it wasn't the files themselves. Still won't work. Out of ideas now.

The problem is between ATV and your TV. HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) protects the copying of digital audio and video as it transmits via HDMI, DVI, and a few other interfaces. An HDCP compliant transmitter (ATV) cannot transmit HD content to non-compliant receivers (potentially, your TV).

This happened to me when I rented a movie from iTunes and decided to finish watching it in the other room on an older set. The older set has an HDMI interface, but the message occurred which tells me the set isn't HDCP compliant. When I switched the ATV back to my newer TV, I was able to finish the movie without an issue.

That you watched the movie once and it seems that HDCP wasn't an issue then but now cannot is less cut and dried, though. It makes me wonder if the current upgrade to 2.2 messed up the HDCP authentication process. Did you recently upgrade your ATV? If so, a factory restore might work. Are your older TV shows and movies in HD? (I am assuming Ironman was.)

I updated my ATV the day 2.2 came out. I have watch HD iTunes content fine up until 2 nights ago, when all of a sudden I started getting the HDCP error. Even shows I'd watch as early as 3 or 4 days ago are giving me the same error. Nothing has changed on my system and I've even done a factor restore and re-installed the 2.2 update. I've also switched cables, turn the ATV on/off/on/off with and without the HDMI cable connected.

Have you done the factory restore and tried to watch the HD shows before upgrading to 2.2? It just seems strange as the HDCP is a hardware solution. I can see a firmware upgrade messing with the encryption, but if that is ruled out because you upgraded in October...

I might say try a new HDMI cable, but it seems to be happening to too many people at once...

Does anyone know if ATV does any service updates without permission when it calls home?

Here is a link to the HDCP compliant products. I am sure yours is on it, but you may want to look.

I just got off the phone with Apple Tech support. According to the person I talked to they hadn't heard of this issue and I was advised to keep watching the Apple support page and forums.... So in short apple couldn't figure it out or hasn't yet.

I purchased Iron Man. It wouldn't play using HDMI cable. Advised Apple and they refunded my purchase price, stating my problem with HDCP was forwarded to appropriate tech division. Further advised that I should try the movie later. I did and it still didn't work. In any case, I am convinced the problem is with Apple TV and its inability to meet the HDCP handshaking codes embedded in newer movies. I mean, why would my Apple TV work for a number of months after I purchased it and then suddenly refuse HDMI cable connections. It all began with the movie Iron Man. Go figure.

Are you able to watch HD content you purchased a while ago? I am now unable to watch HD content that I was able to watch as recently as last week. However, I am still able to watch Battlestar in HD that I purchased over a month ago without a problem, however it is the ONLY HD I am currently able to view.

No. I can't watch any of them. Only through a component video connection.

Same issue for me (only for HD movies and TV shows).

I have a brand new TV (full HD), bluray player and A/V receiver. The HDCP handshake works for all devices (bluray player, TV, A/V receiver, etc.) only my Apple TV tells me that my HDMI connection does not support the content, and that I should try a Component Connection. I am convinced that Apple TV and its inability to meet the HDCP handshaking codes is the problem. By the way I had also recently upgraded the firmware to 2.2.

Help is most appreciated :-)

Just an update on my situation. Still no luck getting the movie to play. The Apple TV unit is hooked up to the same TV in which I first got Ironman (standard definition) to play. I ran the update on the Apple TV after the problem had occurred, hoping it would resolve it. The HDMI cable works fine, I can still watch all my old TV shows, along with newer ones. I have yet to buy a new movie off of iTunes, because I don't think that it is worth attempting it & wasting the money. I have to say though that Apple is not high on my list for support/customer service. Based on reading the forums, I am assuming that this is a fairly wide spread issue with little news on a solution. I appreciate all the ideas & help, hopefully Apple can offer a real solution to this soon.
