Atv2.3 and ac3 passthrough
Posted: Nov 19, 2008 9:08 PM

Just upgraded to 2.3 and now my QT files with ac3 5.1 surround audio are not being pass-through, Anyone else having this issue? Regular 2ch audio comes through fine through optical cable but no ac3 passthrough.
I have a huge video library set for streaming with these file parameters, don't tell me Apple pulled the pass-through option out with this new release!

Same issue here with no Dolby D on my Denon receiver. I just reset to factory for a 2.0 version setting. I prefer v.2.2 with the HD labels but at least 5.1 audio works fine now. Hope there will be a fix for this issue.

i can't believe it. why the **** does apple have a problem, when we want to use our own collection of movies with ac3. i love'd my appletv and spent many, many hours of work to make a collection of my movies for appletv. i spent also much much money for the itunes store, but now this is very disappointing for me and i will think for alternatives of my appletv, because i don't know, what apple does in near future with their software updates - ac3 - yes - ac3 - no - **** - i hate apple - sorry

I must say that I've been drawn to the same conclusion as iceman311. I have an all-Apple set up - iMac, Airport Extreme, Apple TV - and I am finding it very difficult to stream or copy M4V files from my iMac to the ATV. I've tried any number of fixes to this, but the ATV bounces in and out of my iTunes device list when I try to copy movie files to it.

I suspect that 2.2 (or iTunes 8) made this worse and I'm reluctant to give 2.3 a whirl, especially since Apple can't be bothered to provide comprehensive release Notes for 2.3. This is as god as it gets: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3187

The one thing that works beautifully is buying movies from iTunes, so I would suggest that I don't have a fundamental network issue. Yes, the paid-for feature is the one that works! Well done!

Thanks for the heads up on this. I learned my lesson after the last update to hold off on any updates until I see what others are experiencing. I too have a great deal of content ripped from my movie and tv dvd collection. Without the ability to play this content on the AppleTV, the device is useless for me.

Apple has to realize that iTunes is not the only source of video content. I love the quality and content on iTunes, but I am not willing to buy tv shows and movies that I already own on dvd. The more locked down they make the AppleTV, the more irrelevant it becomes.

I am a loyal Apple customer and am beginning to question why. It seems like over the last year and a half I am continually displeased by their hardware/software. Apple is still the best alternative, but its frustrating when being this disappointed after spending twice as much.

Looks like I will be waiting for 2.4 before I think about updating.

Before I decide not to upgrade I want to make sure I have all the facts straight. Will I get no sound or will the stereo/alternate track of the movie kick in?

I cannot believe this! Does Apple break this stuff on purpose to keep us from ripping our own movies and buy ITMS content? This is a complete show stopper for me. I was just about to place an order for 2 additional aTVs for my bedroom/kitchen, but I am not spending a dime until this is fixed.

This is basically makes my entire iTunes movie collection un-usable. I am staying with 2.2 on my remaining aTV. Sometimes I really hate Apple..

Out of curiosity, would this break the DD audio from the digital copy provided on some new DVD releases?

Just so y'all know, the problem you are having is not a universal problem. My ripped files with AC3 work fine. I suspect there may be some issue with your individual files. But that is just speculation on my part. But Apple has not "pulled the pass-through option."

As one trouble shooting option I suggest you delete a troublesome file from your iTunes Library then add it back and see if that helps. I'm not sure it will, though.

Regards,
Michael

That's encouraging to hear to Michael. Thanks. However, I am not sure this update has anything appealing enough for me to try it. The reward is not worth the risk.

Anyone have an official answer from Apple? I would love to get to the bottom of this. I was in the middle of filling up my 1TB usb drive with my DVD collection. Now its all worthless.

Michael, what audio setting did you u se in your HB rips? Did you rip with AC3/AAC or AC3 only? Also, are you certain you are getting AC3 sound and not Dolby ProLogic II?
