Sending email to Spamcop.net
Posted: Nov 20, 2008 1:31 PM

I've been having a few problems sending emails directly to a spamcop.net account. The emails would never arrived.

When I send an email from the web interface of mobileme (me.com) it arrives successfully.

If I send an email via Mobileme SMTP server (smtp.me.com) to a spamcop.net address it does not arrive. However if I send this to all my other email accounts it arrives successfully.

Is anyone else having the same issue?

YES... same issue, but this happens using Mail both on my Macs and my iPhone.

I already posted here but let's keep going with this thread.

I switched from smtp.mac.com to smtp.me.com on my Mac and it was OK for a while. But the problem has now re-occurred with smtp.me.com..

What makes this problem REALLY bad... If any other recipients are cc'd on the message they do not receive it either.

WHAT MAKES THIS PROBLME EVEN WORSE... Not only is the message not received, but I am not notified. The message just 'disappears'.

Spamcop addresses are the only addresses I am aware of with which this happens

IF ANYONE ELSE CAN PERFORM THE FOLLOWING TEST AND POST RESULTS IT WOULD HELP...

1. On your Mac or iPhone use Mail application to create a new message using your MobileMe account
2. In the To: field, put support@spamcop.net
3. In the CC: field put your email address
4. In the subject field put 'Test'
5. Send the mail.

Was a copy of the message cc'd to your mailbox as expected?
Were you notified of a problme?
What Platform, OS and mail version do you have?

Here are my results:

Mac 10.4.11 and Mail 2.1.3 > NEGATIVE (no copy received, no notification)
Mac 10.5.4 and Mail ??? > NEGATIVE (same)
iPhone v2.2 > NEGATIVE (same)

Thanks,

OK - there is a discussion on this over at the Spamcop forums.

Apparently Apple is filtering and silently dropping all emails sent using mail apps via the SMTP servers at MobileMe. The web interface to MobileMe is safe and not blocked in the same way.

This makes me wonder who else do they silently filter and drop drop mail to?

Is this common practice with ISP's?

Is this allowed under the Terms & Conditions of MobileMe?

It's a common practice for any ISP to filter all their outbound mail so they don't get blacklisted. And yes, I'm sure it's allowed via the terms and conditions.

And really, I would not want to be a customer of a service provider that didn't filter their outbound mail. They'd be blacklisted so often no one would receive my mail.

My post on the Spamcop forums go integrated to this thread.

The problem still exists, very annoying, you get no notification that this is being stopped and the email is accepted as if it has been successful by the Mobileme servers.

I've spoken with Spamcop at length about this and they confirm they do not block any emails from being received. They accept all and then catagorise them as spam if needed and move them to the "junk mail" folder within each individuals spamcop mail account.

I spoke with Apple via the online chat, they said that the web interface does not use smtp.me.com (or .mac.com) and uses different servers. Emails from the web interface are received without a problem at spamcop.net

There is some filtering going on with smtp.me.com which is blokcing the message.

As the previous guy said, if you send to multiple receipients and include a spamcop.net address NOBODY gets the email and you still don't get notified that it's not reached it's destination.

This is really odd, as the smtp server should split the email and send this to multiple smtp servers.

Anyone know any good contacts in Apple which would be able to help, I'm losing faith in the online chat!

This is killing me...

I am in a workgroup with 10 people, one of whom has a spamcop.net address.

No-one in the groups receives the messages I send because of the spamcop filtering by smtp.me.com AND I get no notification the mail is dropped.

As you can probably tell this has caused some problems and embarrassment at meetings when i am expecting people to have reviewed my submissions.

And it was only by chance that I discovered it was down to the spamcop address.

Are there any other domains that are filtered by Apple?

RE: The above poster: filtering outbound mail based on address is absolutely not a common practice - providers worried about their users spamming filter based on 1) the number of recipient addresses and 2) outbound volume.

I witnessed the problem as well using Mail.app/smtp.mac.com.

Mobile mes behavior seem .. well, deliberate.

It also puts in question my continued use of mobileme. If I can't trust a service to reliably deliver my messages or tell me that it was unable to I am unlikely to continue using/paying for said service.

I didn't say it was based on address, it's very likely based on content. And since it's spam you're forwarding it's being tagged regardless of the destination address.

That just plain doesn't make sense. If it was based on /content/ it wouldn't affect only mail sent to anything@spamcop.net.

How do you know it wasn't affecting messages sent elsewhere.

Anyhow, I just sent myself a test message to spamcop and it made it through just fine.

filtering outbound mail based on address is absolutely not a common practice

With all due respect, you have no idea what you're talking about. When sending bulk email (millions of messages per day) it is quite common to suppress sends to various user addresses such as postmaster@, admin@ as well as certain domains such as the domains of well known RBLs. If you are providing email addresses fitting the above criteria to companies, you shouldn't be shocked when you are not receiving mail. Volume senders are blocked on every single send by many networks. If they can suppress a few hundred addresses to greatly increase the odds of delivering to thousands.

That said, I’m not sure how much advantage there is to blocking sends to spamcop.net as their blocking criteria seems to be driving off of spam received by people extending much beyond their own domain, but on the same token, why risk sending to an entity that exists only to recommend blocking email?

Mail providers do not filter outbound mail.

Here's how it works: your smtp server sends mail on behalf of your user. If your SMTP server is properly configured, your user must authenticate before the smtp server will send that mail. This is the normal course of business.

Now suppose you (the ISP) get a complaint that your user is sending spam. You disable that users account. No more spam from that user.

Hi Space Herpes,

Perhaps it is acceptable to have outgoing mail filtered by content. But to me it is tough to live with the following:

1. to have outgoing mail filtered by domain alone

2. NOT to deliver the message to other recipients included by the sender

3. NOT to notify the sender when a message is filtered

So far I am only aware of messages to Spamcop.net addresses being filtered. Perhaps there are others?

It would be useful to have some transparency from Apple on this regarding the domains involved. As it stands MobileMe users may have outgoing mails silently dropped without notification.

Spamcop.net is also a regular ISP... some people use it as their ISP.

"GET SPAM-FREE EMAIL
Professional-grade SpamCop email accounts feature spam reporting, customizable spam and virus filtering and simultaneous Webmail, POP and IMAP access."

Also, are other domains filtered by MobileMe in this manner?

Space Herpes,

Please can you try this (not using MobileMe webmail) and post your results:

1. On your Mac or iPhone use Mail application to create a new message using your MobileMe account
2. In the To: field, put support@spamcop.net
3. In the CC: field put your email address
4. In the subject field put 'Test'
5. Send the mail.

Do you receive acknowledgment form support@spamcop.net? Did the CC to yourself arrive?
