iPhone 3G unlocked firmware 2.2 upgrade

I´ve got an iPhone 3G bought in Hong Kong. The phone was bought with no carrier lock. The phone worked without any hickups. However, the upgrade to firmware version 2.2 did make the phone unusable. The phone did not connect to my carrier (not an official iPhone carrier) after the upgrade. I then tried to downgrade the phone, and now it iTunes tells me that the SIM card is not supported.
It seems to me that upgrading a phone that has been unlocked from the start, will make this phone unusable. The question is how this can be fixed. For me, this seems to be a breach of contract with Apple since the phone is bought without any kind of lock in to a particular provider.

Take it to Apple and complain.
It might be a bug, or an oversight.
Or, if you are using the phone in a country where they have an exclusive carrier deal, they may just be forcing the use of that carrier even when they are required to sell unlocked phones. (If this were the case they would be parsing the law in a dangerous way).

I'd like some reassurance on this too.
I bought my iPhone when in Singapore and it worked there just fine.
When I came to the UK I inserted a T-Mobile SIM and it worked fine too. I then ugraded to 2.1 and it locked initially and the activated itself when it got a carrier signal from my T-Mobile card.
However, the 2.1 update wasn't a baseband update too, which 2.2 is. I don't want to upgrade it here and then find it's locked both here and Singapore!
Who can I ask at Apple to get the definitive on this?
Mine is a MB496ZA model.

You have more faith than I do.
And I'm trusting that luck will not be a factor!

it seems to me legally unlocked iphones bought in hong kong are having this issue. i have the same problem (model MB613C) but just talked to an apple rep and they agreed to refund the iphone. however, i don't get a replacement but have to travel to italy or hk myself, if i want to get a new one. i'm so frustrated right now!!
well, i suppose i'm off to italy after christmas...

Was it 'in store' that you spoke to a rep or Apple Support?
I have a Singapore unlocked iPhone (MB496ZA) and want to know if I will have the same locking problem when upgrading.
It was fine when I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1(5F136)

read my post in this thread on some of the Fake iPhone symptoms.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8574158
Your model number is the right one for Singtel so you may be ok. I have heard of many that update no problem as long as the phone is really legal unlock from Singtel.
If 2.1 is no problem for you it may be better to wait a few more weeks and keep reading these discussions until we all know that it is ok for all unlocked iPhones.

Thank you Michael.
I suspected that was the case after seeing an article on a Vietnamese unlock where a chip is removed and flashed to unlock.
As I said previously, I updated to 2.1 OK so 2.2 should be fine.
I'll give it a go and report back.
