iPod restore error (14)
Posted: Dec 7, 2008 8:30 PM

A few weeks ago my ipod(8GB) said i was using about 4gig in "other" i deleted all my apps and it still didnt go down, so i clicked restore and update, my ipod updated however since then has been in "recovery mode."

When trying to restore I get the following message:
The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)

The ipod screen displays a picture of iTunes symbol with the usb cable arrowing towards it.

i have tried using a different computer(also windows xp), using a different usb, holding down home button and on/off button aswell as reinstalling itunes and none of these have worked.

please help, it would be muchly appreciated..i miss my iPod:(

I bought an iPod Touch G2 yesterday, hooked it up to my PC, installed the latest iTunes (8.0.2) and it said I should update my iPod. I said yes. It did so, and the Touch went into recovery mode and now I can't recover it. I've tried all the recovery processes noted. The error message is:

The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14).

I have nothing left but to return the Touch?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Before returning the iPod it's probably well worth given the advice that Casper posted above which covers the error you're getting.

Let us know how you get on.

I have this same error. My ipod is just a permanent white screen. When I try any of those steps there is no change. I tried to restore in DFU mode, which iTunes recognised, but then returned the error 'The ipod "ipod" could not restored. An unknown error occurred (14).'

I have this problem now also. Just got an iPod Touch today for Christmas. I updated my iTunes to the latest version, then plugged in the iPod, synced it, and everything worked fine. I used it for an hour or so with no problems; loved the thing. Then I decided I would update it and make sure the software was the latest version. Downloaded the update, tried to install it, and the iPod went into recovery mode. Tried to restore it and got this same error message (14). Tried all of the steps on the link, but still nothing. What to do now? Is this part of a fluke line of iPods that freak out when updated? What should I do?

Just plugged mine into the other Macbook we have, it restored and updated with no problem. I'm reloading all of my music now. Odd, but at least it's fixed.

Think it's just to use App Store and install them again. You won't need to pay for them again. If you have the receipt in the mail, just use the "search" function to find the software in App Store and re-install them.

I finally used another computer (in my case another iMac). Updated iTunes and connected the iPod and that did the trick. It did the recovery and I could use it. My installed apps was gone. I then connected the iPod to the computer I normally used and it worked as it should. I had to re-install the software, though

Help!
Im having the same problem, and my ipod is seventeen days old.
I have the 2g touch (8 gig model) and it said i had four gig in other and no music, so i decided to restore it. it came up as error 14 unable to restore.
It then booted in recovery mode saying must restore, but im unable to restore?
I keep getting the same error 14 message.
I'd really not like to send it away.
Im running windows XP, and latest version of Itunes.
Thanks.

Have the same problem, Tried everything and nothing is working... might just take it back as it has a 30 days money back thing. Thought the idea of an update was to make it better not to make my ipod touch unusable.
