10.5.6 Has broke Online Banking Access from Safari
Posted: Dec 16, 2008 11:54 AM

Since I updated my Intel imac with this update I can no longer access my online banking with BB&T, this is a very large Southeast Bank, when I log in, it just brings me to another screen, to log in again, no error message, I called the bank and of coarse they told me it's my fault, I must of forgot my password, anyway I talked to their online tech support, and they did tell me that they are aware that the update for the mac has broken the access to their site with Safari, they said I either had to use Internet Explorer or Mozilla, due to the fact that their site is no longer supported by Safari, due to the latest mac update.

Note: I also posted this at another site, where others have posted about the same problem with other online banking websites, not just BB&T

Many banks rely on the majority of their users using IE (the biggest security risk on the market) and don't use the proper industry standards to program their web site, which are the accepted industry standards used by Apple for Safari.

One of my banks does, for the other I have to use Firefox. No big deal, but a strongly worded letter of complaint to the bank might prompt them into not being so stupid!

You missed the point here: the sites worked fine BEFORE under 10.5.5 but they DON'T under 10.5.6 so something related to the 10.5.6 update may be a factor. Possibly a Safari update?

No, I didn't miss the point. The update include a host of security updates and the banks need to update their web sites!

Apple need to do nothing of the kind.

Solution for UK customers - Switch to the Co-op Bank :o) You'll also find that you become a person again instead of an account

I'm getting the same problem with First Direct in the UK but I have found there is also a problem logging into Apple's Conceige Portal so it doesn't appear to be just banking sites.

Hi Guys.....This is an email which i received today from HSBC.
Problem has been escalated to Apple.
Will we get a fix soon from Apple ?????

"Thank you for using the feedback facility for our Internet Banking service.

This is with regard to your query about not been able to login through MAC and Safari.

We are aware of the problem and have escalated the same to Apple. We hope to get the problem fixed as early as possible.

Alternatively you can use Firefox as the browser to access internet banking. We regret the inconvinience caused to you. "

Hope this will help.

I too am a user BB&T online banking and can no longer access the bank after upgrading to 10.5.6. I called the bank this morning and they told me they have been in touch with Apple regarding the problem. I started using Mozilla Firefox and was able to log into online banking. Since I'm a very long time PC owner and recently purchased my first Mac, I'm not impressed with this flop from Apple which I had greater expectations for problem free software. That's why I decided to leave Windows and the PC. Also, I had been a long time user of Mozilla browsers when I had the PC. Safari is starting to look like it's not going to be my browser going forward. What kind of testing is Safari subjected to at Apple? Mozilla has the backing of a large and knowledgeable creative community.
