2.2.1 Upgrade and SIM Error (and Solution)
Posted: Jan 27, 2009 8:04 PM

The 2.2.1 upgrade to my original iPhone was going smoothly until the final phone reboot. iTunes claimed there was a problem with the SIM card, which had obviously been working just fine prior to the upgrade. The phone was unactivated and not accessible via iTunes.

The problem was that I had the iPhone in WiFi-only mode when I did the upgrade. The upgrade and rebooting did not turn off Airplane Mode (although it preserved WiFi-only mode). The SIM appears to need to be able to check with the carrier (or at least ping the radio) to allow reactivation. Ideally, turn off Airplane Mode before doing an upgrade.

To turn off Airplane Mode on your seemingly "bricked" iPhone, disconnect the USB cable (or undock), then slide the Emergency Call switch to reach the emergency call phone. You'll be prompted to disable Airplane Mode. Tap "Disable". Then press the Home button, reconnect the phone, and watch iTunes recognize/reactivate your iPhone.

Finally, cancel the appointment you made for tomorrow morning at the nearest Genius Bar.

Good tip. This issue was discussed after the last update, but it's good to get it out again.

Thanks for the save! I hit this snag updating one of our corporate users (upper management!), and your post probably saved my hide. I don't know if I would've checked past the emergency call screen. Thanks again!
