It seems obvious that this is not a network issue, it's a drawing issue. some parts should be hidden and they're not. Now the question is why does in work for certain people and not others. May be localization, cache, webkit version, please give your configs.

It's working if you are using WIFI connection. If you are using modem, VPN, LAN ,PPOE - then it's not working.

That's debatable. Over Wifi maps aren't showing up for me at all. If i switch to enet, they show up.

I think ParatrooperRus is kind of right... I normally use a 3G ExpressCard to connect to the internet and iPhoto fails to connect to Google Maps.
However I have found something interesting. It seems that iPhoto connects to the net only using built-in interfaces (that's why, Brian, you can connect). But there's more: In System Preferences > Network > Set Service Order dialog, you have to make sure that a built-in interface is placed on top of the list.
My number one was the 3G card and it failed. I turned on my Airport radio (while remaining connected to the 3G network) and moved Airport to the first spot. Now iPhoto can display the maps. Odd isn't it?
Brian, why don't you check your preferences? I bet Ethernet is the first one.

FxNetBoy, you might be on to something, but it may be only part of the issue. This morning (after reading your comment) i logged into my wife's computer to check and noticed she had left iPhoto open. The maps were working and she had even started plotting some points. So, i checked the settings and as you suggested Enet was the first in the list (although the mini connects via Wifi), however it's obviously working. So, just to check I put Enet after Airport and restarted. I went back into iPhoto and now maps are partially working. The map loads, but none of the green highlighted areas load and none of the states of the US load. Talk about random!

Have you tried to play with the Service Order Dialog settings?

FYI, i changed the service order again so Enet is before Airport. Even though I'm using Airport, the maps are working properly again... FxNetBoy, it looks like you're on to something

Well, since PPPoE and VPN are not actually physical interfaces then I guess we have found a bit or logic in this random-esque issue. Very weird...

Problem seems to be all over the place. I Twittered it yesterday to Andy Ihnatko, and he'd been seeing it as well. For me, Places won't see my USB Wireless 3G card, but will see my Aircard. Tried leaving my Aircard on, unconnected while getting internet through the 3G card, but it didn't work.

That's exactly my working scenario (although my 3G card is an ExpressCard)... Connect to the 3G network and then turn on AirPort and connect to your access point. Then in System Preferences > Network > Set Service Order, drag AirPort to the top of the list and OK every window and close SysPref.
Now open iPhoto, it should be working...
It is like if iPhoto was a wanna-be load balancer hahahahaha!!!
Let me know if it works.
