Unobody 17" Macbook Pro 9600M broken gfx card?
Posted: Mar 1, 2009 10:19 AM

Has anyone else been getting some pretty bad issues with the graphics card in the new unibody 17" machines? I have been getting some pretty bad green lines down everything when I use the more powerful GFX card.

This machine is brand new.. the lines do seem to get worse as the card heats up...take a look..

That looks like a pretty classic GPU failure. Time for a repair. :(

This is a BRAND new machine.. 3 days old!
Other people in other forums are also reporting the same problems.. surely this is not normal that so many people have this issue.

I have exactly the same issue. Mostly pops up while playing games or something. They disappear when the machine is doing lower-performance stuff and as the heat increases, they become more and more pronounced.

I've got the exact same problem, with a 3 day old Unibody 17", 2,93 GHz, 4GB ram, matte display.

Problem disappears for a while with a restart. Seems like the 9400 is unaffected.

I am disgusted with the quality of these laptops. The irony is that the new laptop was meant to be a replacement for a replacement Macbook Pro that has a terrible trackpad and loads of other problems.
I really hope this is a firmware issue..
It seems to disappear for a short while if the SMC is reset.. but literally for only 10 mins or so..

It *****, yeah.

I hope I don't have to send it in, especially because I love everything else about this machine. Battery life is actually 8 hours, which I never expected, the matte screen is gorgeous and the computer is extremely fast. I think I'll just be running the 9400 card for the time being, untill somebody figures out what this problem really is. Wishing for that firmware fix ..,

I may well get shot down in flames here but why would you need to use the faster card when using aperture (as would seem to be the case from your screen shots). I thought it was only really needed for gaming or animation etc. . I am using the 9400 card with Lightroom 2.2 and photoshop CS3 and find it to be fine on the 15"

It's not the point what application I am using. The card seems to be bust. I didnt have Motion or FCP open at the time because I was backing up my aperture library to my server if you REALLY need to know, it was just a part of the screen that I shot because it was easy to see through the moire of the LCD.

The POINT IS that it seems that there's lots of people with either duff GFX cards OR bad firmware.

No no sorry.. but I get sick of brushing bad quality control under the carpet because we're all too quick to accept faults because we LOVE Apple so much..

Would you you buy a car if you knew after 3 days the wheels would fall off if you drove above 30 miles an hour?

I errantly posted a similar thread, not aware of this problem. I received a call from Apple support several hours after posting the thread, providing me with information on how to return my laptop for a replacement. Not what I wanted to do, ...but excellent support/service in my book.
I have 5 MacBook Pro's, and this is the only one to have an issue. By and large, they are incredible machines.

Possibly but I had FOUR macbook pros of the previous incarnation, and this is why they allowed me a replacement with the unibody.. now i have more problems that others seem to be having.. I wonder how long it will be before they determine if this is a hardware fault.. or it can be sorted with firmware?

I cant believe that SO many people have the same issues, surely there can't be so much bad graphic card hardware out there?

Hi, ffm. Yes, apparently your machine has a problem. That's unfortunate. So have it repaired or replaced, or return it for a refund. What other option do you think there might be?

This is my first Mac purchase pretty much ever. Bought it to do work and play games in -- this problem happens EXACTLY the same way for me, though only when I'm gaming or doing anything else that makes the machine get really hot to the touch.

Not sure what to do. Not a great first experience here :(
