iPhone caught fire
Posted: Mar 2, 2009 5:48 AM

A couple of days ago my iPhone 3G caught fire. I had left it charging on the USB port of my laptop for about 3 hours. Luckily my wife happened to walk into the room and saw flames coming from the phone and quickly unplugged it. If we had been out of the house at the time it could have resulted in a much more serious fire.

Here is a photo of the damage: http://twitpic.com/1rtag

The fire started in the space between the lead and the phone, and resulted in a couple of pins fusing together. Although the main functions of the phone are apparently unaffected, the device won't connect to the PC which means I can neither charge it nor transfer data. Result: one dead iPhone.

I've returned the handset to the O2 shop where I bought it, and they have sent it away to be repaired. Once I get it back I hope to be able to post more information about what went wrong. In the meantime I wanted to make Apple and other iPhone users aware of my experience, as it seems there is a safety issue here which needs to be urgently addressed.

I'll be interested in seeing what Apple has to say, only because it could have been caused by a power surge. The same thing happened to my PC. It was even plugged into a power strip. Luckily we were home also. I had damage to the entire cord that ran from the strip to the computer, so that is a bit different.

I turned it into homeowners and it was covered. I had first, though contacted HP, because my computer was underwarrenty, but they said that there was no way to prove if it was caused by a power surge or the computer itself, but that the electrical was probably the cause so they wouldn't cover it. I would have pursued it had my homeowners not covered it.

Good Luck!

Wow, that's crazy. What kind of laptop did you have it plugged into? Was the laptop plugged into a surge protector?

I can tell you now they are not going to classify/address this as a safety issue as you are the only person I have read that has reported this and before they go through that extent they would need more then just you to them thats just a isolated issue.. Now if 100 or more people had issue then they would probably address it as a safety issue and maybe issue a recall.

I've read of a couple of other cases with similar damage, so it's not a totally isolated experience. See for example http://www.wearesuperfamous.com/2008/08/iphone-caught-on-fire/

The laptop isn't connected via a surge protector, but then again if it was a power surge wouldn't the laptop have been affected too? It was still running as normal after the fire.

Wow, I'm surprised that a USB connection on the computer could provide that much current without tripping off.

Same here. There would have to be several failures between the power supply and the USB for that to occur.

Since the computer is still running normally, I suspect the source of the current was the iPhone battery, not the computer.
