Extension cable for Apple 24" LED Cinema Display
Posted: Mar 10, 2009 12:05 PM

Purchased the newly refreshed Mac Pro (Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor) and an Apple 24" LED Cinema Display. (The new graphics cards support the mini displayport.) They work well together and I am happy with the results.

There is a snag. The cable on the monitor is too short to reach my computer, which needs to go under the desk. The cable on the display is hard wired. I would prefer not to drill a new hole in the desk if I can avoid it.

The obvious solution would be an extender cable. I find a number of cables that support the displayport standard, but all are M to M. In fact, Belkin notes that their cables are NOT for Apple's mini displayport. The Apple store has nothing on its site, call to the Apple store yielded no solution, and I live four hours from the nearest Apple store. Apple after moving to standard solutions appears to have gone back to a proprietary one again.

I cannot be the only one having this problem. Anybody found a way to extend this cable?

I have the same question and its holding up my decision to get a Mac Pro over an iMac. I tried to ask support chat last night but no one knew the answer (that was on duty) Told me to try back tomorrow.

Yes, I agree. I just received my new Mac Pro, and noticed the same issue. Hopefully an extension is in the works.

May I ask how many inches the cable on the monitor is? I'm planning on purchasing a Mac Pro to go along side the Apple 24" LED Cinema Display. I want to make sure that it will reach my computer which happens to be under my desk. thanks

I don't know exactly, but I would say between 3 - 4 feet.

There is a bracket to attach the Mac Pro to the underside of the desk, instead of putting it on the floor.

This might make it close enough to the display for the cable to reach the graphics card without needing an extension.

It is around two feet long. I would not have a problem with this if I could extend it or Apple had adopted the standard cable with female connector on the display so I could purchase a longer cable. Apple has a long history of slipping into proprietary solutions that are often good (e.g., magsafe on MacBook) but tend to cramp ones ability to come up with solutions they have not thought of.

There are a growing number of m-m cables that would work from various vendors like Belkin, but I have found no extenders from Apple or any other vendor.

As to the monitor itself, I LOVE it. I am sure there will be a solution eventually. I have the new Mac Pro and monitor on the kitchen counter. Not sure how long my wife's patience will last. :-)

That is a good solution really. My desk is about 75 years old. I know I should get a new one, but I like this one. I will look at the bracket for sure. I have also thought about somehow putting the machine on top of the desk, which is very large, until I can get an alternative solution in a long cable.

I use a second monitor for Photoshop controls, etc. Along with a printer, the real estate is getting crowded so a machine is problematic even as a short term solution.

Why not just let me use a longer cable? What is funny is I can extend the USB easily, but I have found no way to extend the displayport cable. What am I missing? Doesn't seem to be rocket science issue. :-)

So is the length of the monitor 2 feet or 3 feet? I'd appreciate it if somebody could measure it. 3 feet might make it to my computer but 2 feet definitely won't.

I measure a max of just shy of 44", but you have to allow some for "bends" etc.

I am now checking with cable vendors. So far, I have not found one that makes a Female - Male displayport cable. I have not yet found a workable solution. The one report was the might consider doing it.

I suggest giving Apple feedback via the feedback web page, which is linked to off the following page:

The good news is I have found a couple of suppliers of female to female connectors that should connect two male to male connector cables together. Suspect that would solve the problem. The bad news is the appear to come in minimum quantity 500. We each need one. :-(

Helpful

So far, I have not found one that makes a Female - Male displayport cable.
Apple uses Mini DisplayPort, not DisplayPort.

The length is just about 3 feet. I just purchased the LED display and the cable just, I mean just, gets to my new MP. I'm using a Matt CD next to it.... very interesting contrast - I really like the LED display. Have searched around for a female to male extension - no such luck. Someone will see the need for this and supply a 2 foot extension for $99.99.
