New Mac Pro Freezing
Posted: Mar 12, 2009 4:07 PM

Hi all,

I just got the new Mac Pro and it worked fine for a couple of hours. Now it just started freezing every 20-30s. The whole thing freezes - the mouse doesn't move, nothing happens (doesn't accept any input). The weird thing is that music keeps playing fine. I can reproduce the freezing all the time by just starting to move a window.

What should I do? I've a bit ****** off cause I had to replace every single product I've bought from Apple in the last 3 years.

I've got the HD4870. The issue is happening all the time, sometimes doesn't freeze for 10 minutes and then it starts freezing every 10 seconds. Also, I can hear some buzzing from the PSU.

Should I try to get it replaced?

I just unplugged my Logitech MX Revolution (after a shutdown) to just test (it's the only 3rd party component I've got). No issues in the last 10 minutes, I'll keep an eye for it and post here with the outcome.

I ordered a replacement. I'll see how it goes in 7-9 days.

Take a look at the activities monitor and see what is hogging the processors. I had a problem with Google Desktop Daemon in the root directory that caused my wife's IMac to freeze with the beach ball of death every few seconds. Finally got it uninstalled and all got better. Worth a look.

It's not that kind of freeze though, it's a hardware lockup.

Just adding a "me too" here. I'm pretty sure it's the mouse and keyboard freezing. In my case, it's the wireless mighty mouse/keyboard from Apple. The computer continues to operate normally but I can't input things. Putting it to sleep doesn't help so I have to do a hard shutdown/restart. Not very good for the harddrive. Hopefully 10.5.7 or something else comes out soon to fix this. It's happened twice in 5 days.

If the video still works during the freeze, then it means it's definitely caused by the input devices (music will usually continue to play because it is buffered even during a full lockup, if the lockup lasts a very short amount of time). There's definitely something wrong, I'm waiting patiently for my replacement to see if it has the exact same problems.

I had a similar early issue with my 2007 MBP. Connecting to WPA2 networks would cause a KP and crash the system. At first, both I and AppleCare thought it was a hardware issue. 3 MBPs later, the issue persisted until we realized it was an airport driver. I'm thinking this just requires a software update so I'm going to hold off until 10.5.7 or some small update before I start exchanging hardware. Fingers crossed. I repaired permissions and reset PRAM this morning so we'll see if that has any effect.

I'll add a "me too" as well... Locked up tight while running Handbrake... No mouse or keyboard input allowed... 2009 2.66 Quad-Core. I'm not liking it!
