Cannot get Samsung Syncmaster 710N to display

I got a new Mac mini the other day and I was intending to use a Samsung Syncmaster 710N TFT/LCD monitor I got mid-2005. I got the mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter and everything plugs in fine, but there is no display on my monitor. I borrowed a Dell monitor so that I could at least get my computer started and set up, and I've used it to change the refresh rate, but I am still not getting a picture on my monitor. The monitor only came with a Windows driver disc, but both the packaging and Samsung's website state that it is Mac compatible. Any ideas on how I can get my monitor working? I definitely can't afford to get a new one.

You probably already tried this but just in case... Have you changed the input mode on the Samsung? It might be defaulting on digital (dvi) instead of analog (vga).
For example to see what's on my vga connection on my monitor I go to the Main Menu > Input Select > Analog

I don't have a menu box. The only thing that shows up when I hit the menu button on the monitor is a little window that says "Test Good" an has five little circles in it.

Ok, I just looked around and your monitor only has a vga connection right? Do you see this message if you disconnect then reconnect the video cable?
"Not Optimal Mode. Use 1280x1024 @60Hz"

No, if I connect the cable the screen just goes black, and when I disconnect all I get is the 'check signal cable' message.

I'm at a loss. Bad adapter? When you connected the Dell monitor did you use the same vga adapter?

Yeah, it's the same adapter. Furthermore, we tested the monitor on my roommate's PC and it worked fine.
I spoke with my dad about the issue this morning and he said it may have something to do with the horizontal refresh rate or something about bandwith? I can change the vertical refresh rate and the resolution in the system prefernces, but I don't know how to change the other monitor settings.

I have got exactly the same problem, also a VGA-SyncMaster 710N, just on a Macbook. When I first connected the mac to the monitor the picture showed up and everything was fine, until I changed the resolution (because it was wrong). Now it shows "Wrong resolution, try 1280x1024 60Hz" all the time, which I did, but it doesnt change anything at all. So the monitor is no use for me, really sad.

Hey I'm having the same problem with a Samsung SyncMaster 910m and a new MacMini
I can use a menu on it and change the resolution. What should I change it to? currently at 1280 x 1024 and I changed it to 60 hz and it still isn't working.

Been poking around google and it seems that model is picky with the signal it receives.
These guys were able to fix the not optimal mode screen prompt by soldering in a resister onto a chip in the monitor.
http://www.fixya.com/support/t223929-no_video_picture
That's a pretty extreme fix though. I'd try turning down the video settings. Maybe the monitor can't handle millions of colors (32-bit depth signal?)
1. Go to System Preferences > Displays
2. Set the colors drop-down menu to Thousands
3. Click OK if you get a warning message
If that doesn't work I'd try using a lower screen resolution. Hopefully this helps.

I am also having this problem with a 710M. I've tried switching resolutions, colours, reseting PRAM or NVRAM, etc. Will not work properly. AARRGH!

Well, I ended up buying a new monitor anyway because apparently it wasn't actually working very well on my roommate's PC either, and research into the model showed that some were apparently shipped with some sort of manufacturing defect that may have to do with the lack of display. Best Buy had a sale on monitors so I ended up getting a 20" widescreen HD LCD Dell monitor, which looks great. It does have the option of VGA output, so perhaps at some point in the future I will try again to get the Samsung working as secondary monitor.

Well, I actually got it working. I had another monitor plugged in for a few hours and decided to try it. Voila! The screen came on at a low resolution and so I changed it to 1280X1024 60hz, the screen went black, and I went uh oh. But then bang! Nice looking screen! I did buy it for $60 so I wasn't expecting too much.
