Safari pauses & spins up ext HDs with ATS Autoactivation errors

I'm seeing this more and more. I'll click on a link to a page and Safari will beachball for a bit while one of my external hard drives spins up.
Looking at the log file I'll see something like:

The bizzare thing is that a font named "Red" or whatever it happens to be is not listed on the web page, or in it's css or is it on my Mac anywhere. And it's not always strange fonts, sometimes it'll show Myriad or something more familiar.
Any ideas? What's the point of having my external hard drives spin down when this adobe/safari bug causes them to spin up when I access seemingly random pages?
(The links in the log file are things that are in brackets in the log file)

I'm also seeing this console message with a Safari beachball (temporarily) and my TM drive (external) spins up. This is with the Safari 4 beta.

Besides "normal" I also have a font name of "ProFont" and "Myriad" in my log history. The "Myriad" reference is for a console log for PathFinder.
Is there a document being opened (PDF or html with web-fonts) that can't find a particular font so it's searching for it (thus the hdd spin-up)? That might account for the large (5+ sec) elapsed times before timeout. I searched my Safari history and couldn't find any pdf's opened in around the times specified - so this theory might be bunk.
So to reiterate W. Raider - any ideas? (This install of 10.5 is relatively fresh, from a clean install in February)

After a bit more research, ATS is the Apple Type Services - it manages fonts on Mac OS X. There should be an process running called ATSServer. Under Font Book.app preferences there is a setting for Automatic Font Activation. According to the Font Book.app help and this Apple Document:

if a file calls for a currently deactivated font (either missing or turned off in Font Book.app) Font Book.app tries to reactivate the font. I now think the long timeout is while it searches for a non-existent font and spins up the external drive. I validated all my fonts and while I have a few duplicates (curse you Microsoft Office!) there are no other errors. I don't have any of the console-referenced fonts installed (myriad, normal or profont - I do have myriad pro, which is what most computers have installed).
Is there a way to not have Font Book search external drives? I can turn off auto activation, but is this the best solution?

This seems to be the exact problem now. I just visited a webpage whose css calls for:
body{font:normal medium 'Gill Sans','Gill Sans MT','Ikarius ADF',Candara,Jara,sans-serif;margin:1.75em auto;width:40em;line-height:1.75;word-spacing:0.1em}
and received back an my TM HDD spinning up and an ATS AutoActivation timeout message in the console for the Jara font. I have Gill Sans and Gill Sans MT so this seems to be a bug in the Safari and/or ATS system. I'll file a bug report and we'll see what happens.
