MacPro 2009 Bluetooth Freezing
Posted: Mar 29, 2009 11:04 AM

Has anyone found a solution to this same Bluetooth problems with my new Mac Pro that I got last week. The bluetooth will freeze & the only way to get the bluetooth to work again is to just re-open the Bluetooth Preferences pane with a wired mouse & the bluetooth keyboard & mouse will automatically start to work again. I never loose connection to the wireless keyboard & mouse, they just stop working (new batteries). This keeps happening intermittently. Thanks for the help Andy. andygippetti at roadrunner dot com

Thanks, I did repair permissions several times with no help. Also reset PRAM, removed mouse & keyboard from bluetooth & re-added them like new.

I have the same issue with my 2009 Mac Pro. It's definitely a bluetooth issue. I can get around it by pushing the power to sleep the computer, the wake with the keyboard.

I am also having the problem with bluetooth. I am using a wireless mighty mouse. Currently, the wireless mouse will stop working about 5 times a day. The only think that seems to get it going again is to turn off bluetooth and turn it back on. The wireless mouse immediately starts working again.

Apple Care originally thought it was a software problem, so they had me delete preferences and do a system archive and install. Neither worked. They now think it is a hardware problem and are replacing the mouse. They say if that doesn't work, they will replace the bluetooth module in the Mac Pro.

I will check more into if the bluetooth connect is being lost. When I turn off bluetooth after the mouse stops working, I get the wireless mouse missing graphic on the display - like that is the first time the bluetooth in the Mac Pro lost the connection. Maybe it is still a software problem.

I'm having Bluetooth "freeze" problems along with quite a few others on this thread (which is mixed in with other problems.)

Update-
I am trying another wireless mighty mouse and am still having the same hanging problem. Interesting side note: It started working again after 10 minutes or so. I was just using the wired mouse and accidentally hit the wireless mouse- and it was working again without cycling bluetooth on and off.

Hey guys. This is what I found out today. Turns out my eight core is getting replaced, less than one day after it was issued. Which was a replacement for my quad core, which is really getting to be a big PITA. We tried
-re formatting and installing osx from both retail and grey dvds
-installing from the time machine back up from the old machine
-repairing permissions
-resetting the flux capacitor.
-Deleting the caches file in library, and one other file in library....

Essentially the problem still remains. Bluetooth mouse sorta works, (like moving through mud) keyboard loses connection to machine unless i'm typing on it, plugging in a usb bluetooth thing causes the machine to crash. Solution? replacement apparently. Which really does me NO good, since now I'm out of work again until the thing gets resolved, which will likely be another week, which means i have to rent another workstation, which is more money gone, which is just sucky.

I'm still not sure what to do. I mean seriously. At this point I'm on my third "top of the line" mac in a week... and have got no work done. I'm leaning pretty heavily to just taking a picture of the box zip code, and selling it on ebay complete. make an extra mortgage payment, and buy a dell with the leftover... Sure apple service is great. The love sending me out new machines... but I can't get any work done in the mean time. I mean maybe I could if I bought a corded mouse and hooked it all up which may be the way I go tomorrow... but still...***???

ilovetoracecross,

Thank you for the details of all the different things you've tried. You'll save me going through all that for nothing.

I suggest you find a wired mouse and keyboard, and use your machine. If they swap out the machine, you could pull the drive from the one you have and swap them so you don't have to go through reinstall.

From what everyone's reporting it seems the solution is either going to be:

1) Something in the OS/Driver.

2) The bluetooth card. Check out this document I found, about replacing the Bluetooth Cable:

Rick,

I think one time the BT Mouse froze, it came back for me after a period of time, too. I'll try that next time.

Scott,
Why would Apple have such detail instructions on replacing the bluetooth cable? You think maybe they may know there is a problem? I think it is a waste to keep sending back the Macpros. Does anyone have a new one that now works correctly? Maybe we could get Apple to send new bluetooth cards.

Andywrld,

They prepare all kind of do-it-yourself instructions. The Bluetooth Cable Replacement document was prepared on 3/3/09, probably well before they started shipping to the public. I wonder why I haven't been able to find one on replacement of the Bluetooth card.

I hope there are real "geniuses" back at Apple looking at the returned machines trying to figure out what's wrong with them, whether it be software or hardware.

If you're having trouble with bluetooth mouse freezing, you might want to try this test to prove it's not your mouse (or even the bluetooth antenna in your machine).

Open System Preferences to the Bluetooth panel.

Note that the mouse has a green dot, and is connected.

Turn off the mouse and you should see the dot go red within a few seconds.

Turn the mouse back on (you might have to click it) and you'll see it turn green and connected.

Leave System Preferences open and use your mouse until it freezes.

Here's what I see: The mouse is still green and connected.

When I turn my mouse completely off, it stays green and connected. You would expect it to go red. Take the batteries out of the mouse. Still stays green.

To regain control of the mouse you can do one of these things (thanks to some other contributors)

1) Connect a wired mouse, switch from the bluetooth panel to the Show All panel, and then switch back to the bluetooth panel. That seems to awaken it sometimes.

2) Connect a wired mouse, and turn bluetooth off then back on. Works every time for me.

3) Sleep the machine by pressing the power button, and wake it with a press on the wired keyboard.

4) Do nothing and wait about 10 minutes.

This will just kill you...
First.. the mouse didn't...freeze. Nor did it even lose pairing.. It did lose connectivity, as did the keyboard. But they both were still paired up.

When I turned this machine on, and initialized the mouse, it went on, and as I went to click the arrow (bottom right) it moved soooo slloooooowly i assumed it must be set to "old woman", and that increasing the sensitivity a la windows 95 would work. Then the whole inability to find the keyboard became apparent.. took 10 min and it still didn't find..

Then the whole losing connection etc etc. I had another keyboard in house, same thing happened. It did recognize it automatically, and it always found it again, but would lose it several times in 15 minutes.

So.... called apple, did a whole bunch of stuff, had them send me out a new machine..

Spoke with the customer care dude today regarding replacing it, beacuse I had been out of pocket so much for travel costs to and fro the repair place, lost revenue from work, cash out for renting a workstation, they gave me a ram upgrade to 12gb. Emailed me a bunch of paperwork pertaining to all sorts of stuff apparently, that needed to be filled out before they could start making my new machine. No big deal.

We figured it would take about a week like the last new one they sent me took, so the theory was to go home, un-time machine everything from the old machine (I only installed osx from disc this time around to see if it would help the bluetooth.. no) and work with either a wired mouse, or a POS bluetooth one until the other machine arrived, then box it up bag it and tag it, and send it back. Simple right?

yeah.
as if.

So I un time machined everything. Took over an hour. (Which i used to make dinner for my son and I and play lego's.) Then, time machine said "I must restart to complete the install". No sweat. Restart.

Then the machine just say there in grey screen. No chime, no motion no nothing...... are you f'n kidding me. Yup. DEAD.
Unplugged reset, removed stuff.. no help. It's sitting downstairs now like a total pos. Called apple up, a little more livid than last time. Since now I can't even download the paperwork at home (i'm on my smart phone now) to get the new machine rolling.

So now they are sending me a brand new mini as well. You know, in case my top of the line computer craps the bed, I can still do some stuff with my spare bottom of the line desktop...... I mean come on... (i would have rather gotten a laptop since I need a new one of those this year, but now I'm really considering do I want to own an apple again..)

I would imagine the mini will ship out tomorrow, which puts it to me friday. I don't know if it can run cs4 even with 4gigs, but we will find out. What are the odds that thing is f'd up...

The real problem is now my hdd has all my classified stuff, personal files, pictures from work, and familly life on it, and I have to take it someplace to get wiped.

I really.. don't know anymore about apple. I'm sticking this in the what are the odds category. What are the odds of this happening again.. Maybe if it does i get a processor upgrade.. i dunno.

I'm not so sure what you're upset about. I'm not the biggest Apple fan myself, I use Final Cut hence the reason I own a macpro, but from what I'm reading they A: Gave you a Ram upgrade and B: are now giving you a free mini? Yeah it's a pain to have to deal with it all...but still that's a lot of free stuff.

This also makes me question how many "upgrades" apple gives out. No wonder their stuff costs so much. I know this is the wrong thread for all this, but with how many times I've read on here that people are sending their machines back and getting new ones just for a bluetooth card makes me wonder if this could be why stuff costs so much. Wouldn't it be more effective to take the machine to an apple store and have the bluetooth card replaced? Probably quicker too.
