Apple DVD player no go

For some unknown reason, my internal DVD player no longer plays DVDs. They just try to start and then hang up. No DVD seems to work...

To determine if it is or is not the player, I suggest DLing VLC, a free and excellent all-media player and seeing if it works.

You can also try creating a new user account and testing the Leopard player under that user.
It's possible that it is the hardware, not the software, if the VLC does not work.

Run System Profiler and check the DVD. It should have a line
Reads DVD: Yes

Lastly, try resetting PRAM.

Hi, I've got this same problem with my MacPro. Have tried VLC and can run dvd's using that so the dvd drive isn't the problem. Have reset the Pram, trashed the preferences and p.list, even reinstalled DVD Player but problem persists. I'm out of ideas, short of reinstalling the OS. I've also run disk utility and checked disc and permissions, which are both fine. Can anyone suggest any alternatives?

The same problem happened to me tonight, all of a sudden and without warning. I got a error code 69889. I have 10.5.7 installed. I reinstalled combo 10.5.7, no luck. Trashed prefs, no luck. The DVD works fine using VLC (lifesaver) so I know it's not the drive. I have not tried the pram flash nor logging in as test. I'll do that tomorrow. Any ideas beyond the mentioned would be appreciated.

Thanks
dale

After I did the security update 2009-02 my DVDs no longer had voice track of all things... they somehow lost that track, the soundtrack works fine, but no voices... going to try zap PRAM, not sure what else to do.

Very frustrating problem. I've had to fall back on VLC to play DVD's. Apple DVD player starts the play, but after 9 or 10 seconds stops dead. I've tried it on various DVD's, which all play on VLC. I've tried reloading 10.5.7 combo, and various other ideas, but nothing fixes DVD player. Hopefully somebody somewhere will have an idea that solves this problem. Perhaps Apple in the next update will.

HI,

Try deleting this file: com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist

/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility.

Yes I tried all of that several frustrating times. I just now trashed DVD player and using Pacifist re-installed the entire DVD player package from my OSX 10.5 install disk, then tried it. Same results. Must be something else on my computer that's preventing DVD player from working is my best guess, but what? Using test log-in I get the same result. I wonder if VLC would cause this. Or some errant plug-in? Any thoughts on that?

Thanks Carolyn for your suggestions. I'm open to all.

Dale. I'm thinking it's the disc or the drive that's causing the problem. Not the app itself so to speak. This is why I asked you whether the problem manifests itself with any disc. My line of thought is that with the new discs the encryption is such that the drive cannot read it properly. An example;

I rented Shuttle the other day. Now I have two drives in my MacPro. Shuttle will play usind DVD Player and VLC in the Sony but will play using VLC but not DVD player in the LG.

If you have a film that was released some time ago can you try it with that?

I have tried a wide range of DVD movies as I have quite a collection. None work with DVD player. This happened suddenly, like a switch was thrown. One day it worked the next it didn't. All the DVD's work fine in VLC, which is a good application, but I like some of the features in DVD player. The last DVD I tried was Michael Palin, Pole to Pole. It failed to play in Apple DVD player. So I used VLC which played it fine. I am thinking it could be something to do with the security update or the latest 10.5 (.7) update. The other point is, I have a backup hard drive which I have not backed up to for a few weeks and i booted with that drive the other day and DVD player worked!! I won't be backing up to that drive until I find the cause of DVD player failure on my main drive. I also use Time Machine on yet another drive for backups. That drive is backed up every hour. As I said before, I also tried logging in as Test and I had the same results, DVD player failed to play DVD's.

Thanks for your tip gumsie, I'll look into it more.

Here's what I would do, (and I realise it's easy for me to say as I don't have your issue but I can't see it doing any damage).
Copy DVD Player.app from your back up drive and create a new Applications folder within your home folder, use that one until 10.5.8 comes out, (assuming there will be a 10.5.8 that is). In the mean time keeping your eye on this and any other relevant threads.
I would leave the original DVD Player in the top level apps folder.

That was a nice idea gumsie. I tried it but it didn't work either. I am thinking I would need to wait for 10.5.8 and a possible fix or buy 10.6 when it comes out soon I hope. I believe there is something wrong with my version of the OS or I have a built in bug to one of the updates. Very strange behavior I have. It is probably located in the guts of the OS, some Unix line that is corrupting the application somehow.

Bummer. Exactly what versions/builds of DVD Player do you have?

Just so I know, when you say it didn't work do you mean DVD player didn't open or the disc still didn't play?
I mean you've done all of the usual steps, reapply combo, clear caches, permissions so I don't know what's the trouble. Is anything show in your logs?

Try playing a DVD again and after it fails, check the console.app logs for any possible clues.
Feel free to post anything of interest here.
If VLC works, it's obviously your OS but I doubt it's the update, since DVD player works on all my machines although I never use it.
You can try this if you have the time/energy/hardware - -
Install a fresh copy of Leopard from your DVD onto an external drive. Keep it simple. No updates at all. Boot into the fresh install and try the player. This should provide lots of clues.
