"ignore the trackpad when the mouse is present" option disapeared in 10.5.7

I have a Macbook Pro (late 2008), 2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo and 4 Gigs of ram. After i updated to 10.5.7 the "ignore the trackpad when the mouse is present" option within the "Trackpad" section in System Preferences just disappeared form there.
Anyone has any ideas what can be done to disable the trackpad when im using the wireless mouse because im constantly hitting it while writing or accidentally, or if the option just went somewhere else im failing to see?
Thank you very much.

Don't think so. It's certainly present on my system. You might try downloading the 10.5.7 Combo Updater from support.apple.com/downloads/ and reinstalling using the standalone updater.
I suggest first reading my tip, Essential Steps Before Updating to 10.5.7!.

This option is gone from my "TrackPad" options as well; also, I read and followed the article mentioned in the previous post (including the use of the Combo updater) and still have this problem. I was unable to update using the System Update function and received the same error message reported elsewhere regarding digital signature. Interestingly, I also just recently downloaded and installed MS Windows 7 RC w/o any problems whatsoever - I am disappointed to see Apple mess this up while MS appears to be getting their act together.

I'm sorry, but this isn't Apple's fault. You have something wrong in your underlying system that was updated. This is evidenced by the fact that you were unable to update successfully via Software Udate or with the Combo updater. The option is present on both of my computers updated to 10.5.7.
I suggest you reinstall OS X before attempting to update to 10.5.7. You may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Yep, disappeared for me too.
I used the Combo updater. No mods, plug-ins or add-ons to my system.
Agree that mileage is evidently varying between users - not a big deal but it looks a little too early to declare this one "not Apple's fault" just yet.

Based on the number of issues/threads both on this site and others, I don't see how anyone could at this point state that this isn't Apple's "fault"; if they are not responsible for the content and implementation of their updates I would very much like to know who is. Bottom line is my trackpad preferences were there yesterday under 10.5.6 and are gone now today under 10.5.7 - could be a coincidence, but I doubt it. Also, I have seen references to a similar issue regarding the appearance of the "Energy Saver" preferences in the battery bar - some users now have the former power optimization settings back while others (like myself) don't. Quite frustrating.

Hi,
If you had read this first and it was available from the Software Update window and the Combo update window, you would know exactly what the 10.5.7 update covers.

Carolyn, the content of your post adds nothing to this thread. Nor does it respect the poster/s who have raised this question seeking help.
The original, and subsequent posters, don't appear to be in doubt about the "published" content of the update. Even if they were, if you yourself have read the KB article that you linked to then you'd know that the queried aspect of the trackpad preferences is not mentioned in it.
All we can conclude so far is that it seems to be a sporadic behaviour following this update - which will have a cause of some sort which appears to remain unknown at present.

Hi,
I don't know if this might solve things, but I decided to take a look in System Preferences to see if this option disappeared for me as well. When the System Preferences window opened, I saw an icon labeled "Trackpad" that I've never seen before. The trackpad settings had the "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" option. I'm wondering if 10.5.7 introduced the "Trackpad" System Preferences option, and what appears to be a "missing" option had just been relocated from the "Keyboard & Mouse section to the "Trackpad" section.
Hope this helps,
Ken

Carolyn - as a previous poster mentioned, the referenced article does not even mention the trackpad or energy saver preference issues. The problem is not the identified changes but rather the fact that there appears to be small updates/changes not identified in the article that do not appear to be working as designed for those us who have followed the appropriate steps. All I would like to know is what do I need to do to recognize these updates.

I don't think this is a 10.5.7 issue.
My new MacBook unibody didn't have it under 10.5.6 too.
Maybe something related to the new models of portables?
I think this is still present in non-multi-touch trackpad Macs but is gone in multi-touch ones.

Just finished updating from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 and also lost the "ignore trackpad when mouse..." option. Now even with my mouse connected, the trackpad is active and always causing some inconvenience Really hating it!

I have this problem as well. But I did some additional digging, and this is what I found.
This specific option left the preference panes GUI at least as of 10.5.6, possibly sooner. That said, the OS still honored the setting. You can verify this by running the following command in the Terminal:
defaults read -g | grep Trackpad
If you had set the OS to ignore the trackpad in an earlier revision of the 10.5, it will return the following:
"com.apple.mouse.ignoreTrackpadIfMousePresent" = 1;
The big difference is that 10.5.7 no longer honors this setting, and the Trackpad is enabled whether or not a mouse is connected to the computer.
This is a step backward, and I'm hopeful that Apple will resolve the problem with a future update or at least publish a terminal based workaround. I will submit a bug report to them re: this.
