Entering an equation to automatically change text?
Posted: May 24, 2009 7:06 AM

Here's my goal:

To create a number music chord and lyrics charts for a book and electronic presentation. I want to make it so each chord chart can easily be changed for the musical key (thus, transposing every chord to the new key). I'd like to lyrics to stay the same, but the chord symbols above it to change. I don't know if this is possible in Pages...but for example:

C G Am G
I love you, Apple Computers

The above line with chord symbols, then I want to transpose the key to Eb:

Eb Bb Cm Bb
I love you, Apple Computers

But instead of having to go through each chord and erase and write the new one, I wonder if there is a way to instantly change every chord to the new key. Perhaps an equation or something?

Thanks.

Pages >Preferences > Auto-correction

Check the box labeled "Symbol and text substitution", and make the appropriate table entries for your chords.

Brie, I don’t think text substitution is going to transpose his chord progressions. What Chris wants is to tell Pages what key he wants his music in and then have the program change all the noted chords into that key. In this case, the C would change to Eb, the G to Bb, the Am to Cm, and the G to Bb. If he selected the key of F, the C would change to F, and so on. I think he needs a music notation program.

Hey

Yes Walt - that is exactly what I want. I do have notation programs that can do all of that, but it's usually a pain in the butt to set up. Pages is so easy to use. I guess in the time I spent writing all this out I could have done it in my notation program - oh well! Thanks.
