I'd just look at it like a free replacement with a unused battery -- ***** that you are without a phone, but you can live! Just imagine it's 1985 and cellular phones are a star trek geeks dream, or reserved for billionaires. :D

Hmmm....my final attempt to correct this before going to bed appears to have been successful...I hope.

What I did was disconnect the phone from the usb cable and hold down the power button for about 30-40 seconds. After that the progress bar appeared on the phone and it went to the emergency call screen - first time since updating.

I've connected to iTunes and it's restoring from the last back up...oh no, forget that, I'm back to the flashing screen again.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

I know, worse things happen at sea and all that...

You're assuming of course that O2 will do the decent thing and replace the phone for me - they're not known for their customer service. Original box and receipt by the front door ready for war in the morning.

Will update y'all tomorrow - thanks for the advice and good luck.

Figured out my issue, in case it helps somebody else. I saw in a different thread a suggestion to only use the official iPhone USB cable. I was using a Belkin cable. Once I switched to the official cable, the phone was recognized and started a restore.

I am now learning the painful lesson of the difference between a back-up and a sync. All along I thought I had been backing up the phone, but I had only been syncing it.

has anyone tried doing the official reset, i.e. hold down home and on/off till it shuts down. then connect to computer with itunes closed, let the phone boot up itunes, reformat the phone then start again. download software to computer first. then repeat process. let phone boot up itunes and it will ask you if you want to upgrade.

Thank you! that did the trick! =)

Okay, here's an update - and a positive one at that.

Following the advise on the Apple website, I went to a second computer, downloaded iTunes, and connected the iPhone to that computer. The restore function kicked in and this time it ran all the way through. My iPhone is now updated to version 3.0, and has just now completed a sync of my old data on the original computer.

So it looks like all is well.

I have to say, however, that this is one of the most ridiculous updates I've ever seen. I'm a pretty experienced, mature technical engineer. I can't imagine what the ka-zillion kids out there are going to do when they run across this.

Nice job Apple...

Bingo. Doing what Apple calls a force restore will resolve 90% of those of you experiencing this issue right now. Making sure you iphone is completely powered off. Hold down your home button and connect the iphone to itunes until you see the message that itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. From there follow the instructions to restore & update your iphone.

Now for those of you who were able to successfully do an update to 3.0 and now think your phone is bricked showing the connect to itunes screen you should think twice. The reason probably so forth is you did the update during some busy hours as the whole world is still trying to download 3.0. Itunes is going to fail to connect to the server at times due to overload. What happens is your iphone successfully updates to 3.0, restarts and needs itunes to activate it. However itunes is too busy and returns an error thus showing you the connect to itunes screen or emergency mode. All you have to do here is unplug you iphone and reconnect it. Itunes will then retry to activate your iphone. Disclaimer: U may have to do this more than once until itunes is able to contact the server to activate your iphone. If you cant activate it and keep getting network timeout error you will simply have to wait and reconnect your iphone again later to see if it can activate.

For what it's worth, I turned my iPhone off and quit iTunes, then plugged the iPhone back in. After 6x, it let me do a complete restore, and then everything worked. The first few times, I just kept getting the same USB screen.

All well and good if you can turn the bloody thing off!

After two hours sleep I tried again this morning - reinstalled itunes, deleted and redownloaded the .ipsw - restore appears to work OK until a few minutes later when the phone turns itself into a lighthouse - flashing white screen every ten seconds. This has happened about ten times now and I've just about had enough. I even tried restoring to the previous firmware but this returned an error.

Pathetic Apple - you've had long enough to get this spot on for EVERYONE - get your house in order!

Well- I just did what someone on this board said-- I held the power and home button and connected it via USB to computer and --- got the white apple symbol and prompt to restore. SO far so good.

I tried to upgrade to 3.0 today and got "bricked" with the "connect to iTunes" symbol. I closed iTunes, disconnected and reconnected the iPhone to the USB port and restarted iTunes. iTunes detected the phone needed to be restored and informed me of as much. I clicked the restore button, things happened, then my screen would go blank and eventually iTunes would show a "1604" unknown error. Very upsetting...

I finally reverted my iPhone back to 2.2.1. If you are using your main iTunes computer, you should have a copy on your hard disk. If not, like me since I'm on a business trip in the US away from my apartment in Russia, then you need to download it from a site. Google something like "2.2.1 ipsw download file" and you will find the 247M file somewhere on the Internet.

Anyway, instead of letting iTunes try and automatically try and upgrade you to 3.0 in an endless cycle when you hit the "Restore" button, hold the Shift key down and then hit the restore button. A window should open up asking what "ipsw" file you would like to restore from. Chose the 2.2.1 file and it's like you will be restoring back to 2.2.1.

The above got my iPhone 3G working again to the 2.2.1 standard. Luckily, iTunes backs up your iPhone when you try and upgrade. After the restore process, iTunes asks you if you want to recover from the backup. I did and got all my notes, contacts, SMSs, clock settings and photos back.

I have an appointment at a Genius bar tomorrow, just in case I could get the iPhone working on my own. Now I will use the appoint to see if they can get me upgraded.

Sorry. The last paragraph above should read:

I have an appointment at a Genius bar tomorrow, just in case I could NOT get the iPhone working on my own. Now I will use the appointMENT to see if they can get me upgraded to 3.0.
