You CAN NOT transfer anything to the iPhone from your computer via Bluetooth nor could you ever. I have no idea why everyone here is wasting their time trying to pair their iPhone with their computers. You can't do it because it's not a feature of the iPhone. The only way to transfer content is by syncing with a USB cable or pushing info using MobileMe. Even if you do manage to pair your phone there's nothing you can do with it.

John.grayson, we are pairing the iPhones to tether internet. That is the reason. There IS something you can do with it and we're trying to figure out why most people can, and we can't.

In Network Preferences I had to create a new service and attach it to the Bluetooth PAN.

this is a confirmation that the above approach works.
Using internet tethered on Macbook and iPhone 3GS on T-Mobile Netherlands, despite the fact that T-Mobile NL does not officially support tethered internet on the current network.

Never say never...there is a software program out there - Reunion - which is a genealogy program that syncs to its iPhone app via bluetooth! I had it working with my old phone but having trouble with bluetooth connection with new 3GS. Will continue reading and see if I can find the solution but wanted to clear this misconception up.

My apologies - Reunion uses a wireless connection via Airport, not Bluetooth. Sorry!

I think we have same problem. Our problem is Blutooth problem on iPhone I think.
Not Tethering nor Macbook.
I try to do pairing with my MacPro, but same as you wrote:

My macbook is able to detect my iPhone but the iPhone just keeps searching indefinitely, if I configure a new device I get the "passkey" screen on the iPhone, I click connect and it does for 2 seconds then disconnects. It adds my Macbook to the list of bluetooth devices but it never "sees" it...
I can see it on my System Preferences Bluetooth window, that the light goes from red-disconnected to green-connected when I tap on my Macbook in the list but after about 1 second the light goes red again...

I think our iPhone Bluetooth is the problem.
Anyone can help or same problem?

Hello,
My bluetooth between macbook pro and iphone was working fine since i did the bluetooth update on macbook pro yesterday.
i tried to delete device on macbook and on iphone then pair them again, i got the 3 dot on bluetooth icon for 1 sec then got back to normal icon.
Macbook pro, 2.4ghz 2gb

Yes, Mine is updated too. I did the bluetooth update new one.

I also have exactly the same problem. Why don't any of those thousand of APPLE ENGINEERS reply this simple issue? Or doesn't apple have a solution for just to connect an iphone to a macbook its very well known apple way..
I feel like running a pc trying to establish the connection.. This is not apple way!

How to turn "Tethering" on:
On the iPhone, go to Settings>General>Network! (not Bluetooth, where you'd expect it)>Internet Tethering ON.
There you can also read up how to connect with a USB cable (probably the fastest way) or via Bluetooth (saves you carrying a cable).

Some guys are not listening to us.
Our problem is not Tethering only.
We can not pair with MacBook (a lot of people who has MacBook)

Hello All,
Just thought I'd throw in my two cents - I've got Bluetooth internet tethering working on my MBP running 10.4.11, and my iPhone 3G running OS 3.0.
I had all the same symptoms as you're all talking about - my iPhone would "see" my laptop, but would connect for 2 seconds before losing it. Similarly, my laptop would "see" the phone but couldn't get through. The ONLY way I can get them to connect is to try to connect them at the EXACT same time. Sounds stupid, but it's worked 3 times in a row 
Assuming you've paired the device, (entered the passcode your laptop demands from your mobile device):
1) On your iPhone, go to General-Bluetooth and turn your bluetooth on. Then, get ready on that device name, that says "Not Connected"
2) On my MBP, click the Bluetooth icon in the finder bar, and get ready to click the "join Network on (Device name)"
3) Click 'em both at the same time, or possibly slightly staggered, (who knows with this stupid bug). Bottom line is that you want each searching at the same time.
