software update - full disk - Cache
Posted: Jun 19, 2009 1:53 AM

Hi all,

After to update to 10.5.7 on my xserver Power PC I am having a problem with the softwareupdate process.

I am having the software update scheduled disable in the preferences, but everyday a process called softwareupdate turn up and to begin to eat all the cpu creating a file Cache.db in /private/var/root/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate until to have the disk full.

I am not seeing anything in the console logs.

Any ideas? is it a bug in the new 10.5.7 sever?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Carlos

We are also having the same issues since updating to 10.5.7 server. Both PPC XServes. Although another two 10.5.7 Servers have not shown this problem.

The issue also seems to be affecting the ARD and ASLManager process as well, crashing out about every minute and restarting.

From CrashReporter:

There are three, yes three, software update processes that run on OS X server. One is the commandline version /usr/sbin/softwareupdate which can be run from the commandline and also runs from within Server Admin when you click on the Server Updates icon and click 'Check for updates'. The second is /System/Library/Core Services/Software Update.app, this is the one that runs from the 'Software Update' prefpane and from the Apple Menu->Software Update. The third is /usr/sbin/swupd_syncd which runs the SUS update daemon to sync your local SUS with the one at Apple. This is the one that is probably giving you the trouble.

Check the configuration through Server Admin to see that the SUS is turned off -if you want it that way. Once you configure SUS to to be off, check these files using 'Property List Editor.app' (from the developer tools or Server Admin Tools install):

/private/var/swupd/swupd.plist

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.swupdate.host.plist

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.swupdate.sync.plist

for the boolean key, 'Disabled'; it should be checked.

Then delete the contents in:

/private/var/root/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate

and

/private/var/root/Library/Caches/swupd_syncd

Do Not delete any of the files in /private/etc/swupd you will regret it.

Then reboot the server.

If you continue to have trouble with the swupd_syncd running, then there is probably a problem with the .plist files. Try deleting them and restarting the server, then re-configuring through Server Admin. Then reboot and start the service (it might come up started already, just stop it again).

If you have a small boot drive, you can symlink those cache folders to another, larger, drive to keep from using all the disk space on the boot volume -IIRC that was an option under 10.4.x.

All settings for anything to do with software update are disabled. Have forwarded this issue to Apple Australia, waiting on reply.

At the moment best advice has been to rename /usr/sbin/softwareupdate to /usr/sbin/softwareupdate.disabled and then kill
the process again.

Note that some subsequent software updates (particularly if you use
Combo updaters) will install a new version of /usr/sbin/
softwareupdate, and you're back to the same problem again, so you need
to keep an eye on this after applying updates.

Glad to see others are having this problem too and it is not just me. I've reinstalled 5 times now due to my server drive filling up. Could you please elaborate on how to "kill the process" after I rename /usr/sbin/softwareupdate to /usr/sbin/softwareupdate.disabled ? I tried opening the activity monitor application and selecting the update process and pressing the quit process button, but it keeps reappearing.

I've also been working with Apple on this issue for a while and have just submitted several logs and other EDC logs. Thanks for the suggested work-around!

My problem seems to be in /private/var/root/Library/Caches. As you can see below right now it is 12GBs and it has grown as big as 150GBs sometimes rebooting will clear it out and sometimes I've had to reinstall everything.

I did find a post on another discussion group that said to delete ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate file and that would fix the problem. I didn't have a ByHost directory, but just went ahead and delted the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate file and so far my drive has stopped filling up.

Thanks Mabel! This worked fine for our 10.5.7 Intel based server.

I've been trying to track down the culprit for the last week, and had a hunch it was the weekly Software Update check.

By running the Software Update sync in Server Admin, I was able to watch free drive space disappear each sync cycle. Apple must have borked something in 10.5.7.

To note, /private/var/swupd should be /private/etc/swupd, as mentioned later in the post.

Yes, the file's path indicated here:

/private/var/swupd/swupd.plist

is actually here:

/private/etc/swupd/swupd.plist

Are any of you with this problem using a proxy server for web browsing which requires authentication? If so, can you list what software is being used?

For those that haven't disabled the software update process, type the following and see what is in the Cache.db file. Is it lots of the same string?

sudo -s
strings /var/root/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/Cache.db | more

Hi sysne - thanks for helping us figure this out. At our office we don't have a proxy server, however we do have a Websense program that blocks content (adult sites etc) when I open a web browser it does ask me to login to it before I can access the web. I have logged in and saved that password to my keychain on our server.

I also have disabled the software updates, but if I have time next week I'll turn them back on to check the Cache.db file for you.

Yes, we have to run through IT's IIS proxy services, and they run WebSense as well. Wasn't much of an issue before, until the 10.5.7 update. =\

If you are running Websense or or any other proxy software, you can 'whitelist' the IP/FQDN of the server so that no proxying takes place. If you don't control the proxy, talk to your network admin who does, for configuration.

Unfortunately, we are part of an organization that is all PC computers and they do not support Macs or make exceptions in their security or filtering for us. So whitelisting is not really an option. However, I might be able to have them turn it off temporarily to see if the Websense is causing the problem.
