New 3GS Battery Life
Posted: Jun 24, 2009 7:33 PM

Hi,
I can't find my original question now to see what the answers might be.
My phone's battery dies at about 8 pm (starts day with full charge - on overnight).
My prevlous 2G would last beyond an entire day.
One of the reasons I upgraded was to improve battery life.
The techs at apple over the phone had me change a bunch of settings to save battery. Still running about in line with a shut-down about 8 pm tonight.
Please don't tell me this is "normal" for all 3GS phones??????

After you "login" on the right of the screen is a menu, click on "my post" & all your post will be displayed. Everyone's battery life will depend on use. Mine easily makes a full day everyday as did my 3G phone with moderate use. I run Bluetooth, wifi & push all day long. I unplugged my phone at 6:00am today, it's now almost 11pm & I have 36% life left.

I have, and I find conflicting information. Some indicate the battery life is worse than previous generations of the iphone. Others seem to think it's an isolated instance or something the user is doing wrong.
I am looking for general clarity on the issue.
Should I mail my new phone back to Apple for them to check it. Or, sadly, might there be a general problem????

COMPLETLY drain the battery to where it shuts off on its own, charge it untill its fully charged, restart the iPhone and do this atleast 3 times within a couple of days? If it still doesnt help, take it in to your local Apple store.

Actually, it did it on its own last night and the night before. It died due to battery.
I have to take a jet to get to an apple store. I live on the island of Kauai. My only recourse is to send it to Apple. I think I mentioned that above.
It sounds like I have a lemon if all you folks have no problems with yours?

Does that mean that you too have a battery problem?
Are there Apple apologists in here?'
I bought my first Apple computer in about 1980. I have been pushing Apple products longer than most in this forum. But, when their products don't work as advertised, I have a problem. And, is it up to me to do all sorts of research to determine that my phone has a problem? Shouldn't they want to find out if it might be a common problem and to satisfy their customers?????

Very many of us (probably the great majority) are NOT having a battery problem with our 3GS. Mine gets better battery life than with my 3G.

Now that is the information I was looking for. If you are correct, then I will return it by mail to Apple so that can check it out. Per your comment, I should anticipate that they will conclude there is a problem with my phone and send me a new one which will work better than my previous iphone.
Thanks.
I will try to contact you with the results of Apple's "checking it out"

by them sending you a new 3GS, its a 50/50 shot of you having better results. there's even the "yellow screen" problem floating around.

Battery Usage depends on the features you enable:

3G (of course)
Location Services
WiFi
BlueTooth
Screen Brightness
PUSH

On the whole I found that moving from 2G to 3G (last year) I charged my battery every 1 to 1.5 days whereas I'd frequently go over 2 days on the 3G. The bigges contributor to this seemed to be 3G and PUSH. My new 3Gs is averaging about the same as my 3G unless I spend a lot of time on WiFi...where the 3GS cosumes less power than the 3G (or the 2G.)

Location Services seems to eat a lot of battery as does BlueTooth.

The reason I mention PUSH is that it does keep a connection open to the server..if you leave the phone unused it will transfer data to ping and sync etc. This is often the reason you'll see 5 to 8% battery drop overnight.

PUSH (and Fetch) can occasionally get hungup, especially if there is a problem comminicating with Mail Servers and it will happilly sit their trying over and over again until it's stopped (usually powering off the phone or can be the condition clears.)

My usual runing condition

3G on
WiFi On
PUSH On (MobileMe and Exchange accounts)
BT Off
Location Services Off (enable as needed)

With this on the 3GS I've gotten anywhere from 5 to 7 hours actual usage according to the meter on the phone.
