iPhone 3GS battery life

Am I missing something? I thought battery life was improved? I can't get through a work day without the battery in the "red zone". I'm finding myself have to charge throughout the day just like with my original 3G model. Any suggestions out there of how to increase battery life? I drained it all the way and recharged over night and still the same. I wouldn't consider my usage extreme or heavy. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I had the same issue. My charge did not last from morning to evening with a very moderate usage of checking mails just 5 times in a day and 10 minutes of Youtube video. All this was on Wifi with 3G turned off.
Now as an experiment i have turned off both my 3G and Wifi. I am only on 2G and just using iphone for making calls. This is my 3rd day and i have 47% of battery left. Maked me wonder why I'm paying extra $30 for data plan which ruins battery.
FYI, My Nokia N85 lasted 3 days with Wifi on and multitasking apps on most of the time. (Gmail/Fring/Yahoo)

I'd been having this problem since setting up my new 3GS two days ago, and I think I've found the resolution. Symptoms first: battery was draining fast, iPhone was very warm to the touch, and it took quite a while to recharge.
I searched these forums and googled "Battery Drain iPhone" and discovered the likely problem. Apparently something in the setup of my Microsoft Exchange email account was the culprit. Check out this brief blog entry:
http://reaincalgary.blogspot.com/2009/01/iphone-3g-battery-draining.html
In any event, the short answer is that "somehow the account was erroring and it was polling the exchange server ALL THE TIME thus using the battery up very quickly." So while the problem is not unique to the 3GS (they had experienced it on the 3G), it did rear its ugly head when I set up the new iPhone.
I've 'fixed' the problem on my 3GS, and I can honestly say that the battery life is excellent, far better than my previous 3G. I hope this helps.

My 3Gs just completed 4 full days on a single charge. 5% battery still left. I've turned off my Wifi and 3G. I'm only on 2G for the last 4 days with 0% (zero) data transfer.

Hi,
I have the short battery life issue on my new iPhone 3GS I just brought on July 1, 2009 from Apple retail store. The battery was draining very quick (even though 10 hours without WiFi on was dry out). However, I don't have the data plan with the carrier. Then I checked every setting and I turned off the 'PUSH' option, by default it is 'ON'. After that, the battery is so perfect, used 6% for more than 5 hours standby (without WIFI turn on).
For my case, I don't understand why this setting have a big impact on the battery consumption. I think the O/S 3.0 tried pull data from exchange repeatedly. The program bug?
Now, the battery in 3GS is excellent.
This is my story.

My phone has been unplugged for 9 hours now, very mild use, and my battery is now at 25%, the screen brightness is also at about half.
...is this normal?

My battery did not last even for a day the first time i used my 3GS about 2 weeks back. That is when i read about recondintioing of the battery. Its simple to do. Just leave your iphone plugged to the wall for 8-10 hours.
My phone lasted for 4 days and 6 hours with 3G and Wifi switched off. And with for nearly 2 days with 3G and Wifi on and normal usage of about 30-60 mins talk time each day + 30- 40 mins of you tube and 90 mins of video + checking emails manually 5-6 times a day.
The reconditioning of the battery is recommended once every 3-5 months. In between these months you can use the regular 2 hours to full charge. Try this out and let me know if this is of any help. Good luck.

See what happens is, if you post in the existing threads, people who come along later with the same problem have an easier time finding information on it.
Whereas if you start a new thread, the next poor bozo has yet another thread to wade through when he/she uses the very useful Search box.
It's only sensible to look through the posts that other people have made to attempt to resolve this, rather than assuming that they all have the time to post all over again just for your benefit.
Given that Templeton's made more than 13,000 posts, one might assume that he's made something of a contribution rather than just kicking sand in his face.

This seems to work to resolve the Exchange Server battery issue.
My first 3GS would die in 5 hours in standby mode. 3G on, WiFi on, location services on, a few email accounts and also an Exchange server account on Push on. I went to the Apple store, and they replaced my phone with a new 3GS.
I first restored the new iphone with my backup. Same problems occurred - battery was draining even in standby. So I did a complete restore as a new phone and wiped it. Same problems again.
After searching the forums, I have to agree now that it is related to how the Exchange Server and my PUSH account were working. I could see that my USAGE and STANDBY times were pretty close even though I knew my phone was sitting there in standby. This confirms that my phone was working in the background - my guess is the push email was indeed constantly on and polling.
Once I turned off PUSH, my battery life normalized, and I could see that it could go for at least two days with light usage. Did that for a couple of days.
Then seeing Stuart1 post - I decided to try to reactivate the PUSH to see what would happen. Following the blog - I deleted my exchange server account. Then rebooted my 3GS. Then reinstalled my exchange server email account along with my calendar.
Voila. I don't know why, but the PUSH email and exchange account seem to working fine now with no battery draing. Wifi on, 3G on, location services on. The only glitch I could see was that a calendar item for "today" did not transfer, and still hasn't transferred. everything else (all mail and other calendar and contacts) seem to be okay.
So, there must be some issue in an intial setup of the iPhone, where if you are also trying to immediately initialize an exchange server account that causes the account to incorrectly continue to poll the server and drain the battery.
I don't know why deleting the account 2 days later and reinstalling worked. But so far it is working.
