Sounds to me like you're confusing hard drive space with RAM. It sounds to me like your hard drive is too full, so you need to delete some data immediately.

Did you empty the trash?

If so, in Finder, open a window with Macintosh HD. Click the "Go" menu. Choose "Go to Folder.." Copy this next line:
private/var/log

and paste it in the box. Once the folder opens, sort the files inside by Size. Do you see anything overly large? Nothing in here should be more than a few MB in size. If you see files that are larger, delete them & empty the trash.

Yes, go ahead and delete them. They'll be recreated if needed.

Once you've got those gone, download OmniDiskSweeper and have it inventory your hard drive. It will help determine where your space has gone off to. Do NOT delete anything unless you know what it is!

thank you so much not even half the files are deleted yet and it has freed up so much space.

i downloaded OmniSweeper too so i'll run that as soon as trash is empty.

thank you again you have really helped me out with this nagging problem Lyssa :-)

thanks very much for all your help.....im after noticing one problem though. I can't seem to open my Itunes now. It says "Itunes application cannot be opened. An unknown error has occurred (13010)"

Would i have deleted something critical from that folder do you think?

Try downloading iTunes from the Apple website & installing the newest version.

Hmm. Only other things I can think of is installing the 10.5.7 or 10.5.8 combo updates on your computer to see if that cures things. Otherwise, you may want to head over to the iTunes forum here:

And post your issue to see if the folks in those boards can help.

papillons1985:

Try everything I mentioned in my posts and feel free to ask questions if you see anything you don't understand.

What exactly is your issue?
