Just to follow up, does anyone know of a place in Houston that can repair or replace the power supply?
Also is there a way to transfer the data without doing these things? Would like to have the information available in case Apple decides to not fix the issue.

Mine died today - purchased 4/29/08
Will schedule an appointment at my Apple store in a few days. What is the best way to go about getting the data on the new drive. Sounds like Apple is not doing this?
Apple sure is not doing it.. nor will they... It is just plain too hard.
Can someone repost any places to get the power supply repaired. Sounds like that may be the better route?
If you carefully open it and lift out the drive you can copy the files to internal hdd or another external drive. Put it all back together and then pass it back for repair... as long as it is undamaged they cannot tell if you accessed it or not. Main thing is to follow instructions about removing the rubber boot with a hot air gun.

There is nobody setup to repair them except me... AFAIK... and I am in Australia... but any electronics repair shop can replace the capacitors in the power supply. And if you remove it and pass to them it should not cost that much.

Add one more victim of Apple's shocking poor design of their Time Capsule product.
Complete power failure of my 1TB first gen TC purchased 16 months ago.
Apple was no help. Told me to fork over $420 to replace TC AND I would have to turn in original BUT LOSE ALL MY DATA! This is the best option?
I love Apple and am a die hard but the last thing I expected was this type of failure, due to a poor design, AND to be treated like a lame PC user.
Nice concept but I should have known better and trusted my storage and backup solution to reputable vendors with a track record.

Absolutely not!! You can buy a new one cheaper... and keep the old one... even if all you do is get the hdd out and put it in a enclosure... at least that gets your files back... I am sure if enough die,,, and since the design is so poor I see no reason for them not to continue dying (like flies!!) right up to the ones they made yesterday and today and tomorrow until they repair the design flaws. Eventually people will stop buying them until Apple extend the warranty on all the faulty ones... so keep it. For a rainy day... !!

A backup device should
1. Have two discs in mirrored raid.
2. Have easy access to replace the disks.
3. Have a power supply that is temperature controlled or easily replaceable.
4. Temperature control on the hard disks if they are stacked to extend their life. High temperature do hdds no good at all.
5. Have loads of memory like 1-2GB (memory is cheap as blazes now and NAS speed is directly proportional to how large a file it can hold in cache) and truly high speed gigabit interface.

What to do?
I previously reported my 18 month old TC died last week. Apple has offered to replace it with another 1st gen TC that they had to order. Refurbished?
My wife is going to pick up the replacement this morning and will be required to leave the old one. While I did not store data files on the TC, I have extensive backup data including medical records, financial, etc. I am not comfortable with letting Apple send the old one to some 3rd world country for disassembly even though they promise to destroy the data. This is a load of crap!
My choices are:
1) Go along with the exchange and hope for the best
2) Keep the old TC and purchase a new 2nd generation TC. Whats different about these? Will it fail in 18 months?
3) Scrap the whole TC idea and purchase an Airport Extreme. I have a 1 TB Seagate Free Agent that I could use for manual backup if necessary. Will the Airport Extreme exhibit the same power supply failure?

Although mine died couple of weeks ago out of warranty, I still hesitate to get mad at Apple at this point. Thing is, their customer service has really been great so far in this case. First of the recommended the option of invoking my EU consumer rights by taking the TC to an authorized reseller, since it is not 2 years old yet. Second they informed me that they would of course replace it themselves, if it really is a general problem caused by faulty engineering.
However, I do understand that they need a little time to figure out what to do if this is the case. So far I'm patient for at least a while.
I have chosen not to contact the authorized reseller yet, as I am more confident in Apple handling my old hard drive with confidential information than a retailer downtown.

FWIW, When I went to meet with the Apple Genius at my local Apple store, this is what he said:
"It is out of warranty. We can fix it for $499, and Apple will destroy/erase the drive. Or you can buy a new 1 TB Capsule for $299 and keep the old Capsule, then you can remove the drive and put it in a disk enclosure and use it."
It really makes no sense. The out of warranty repair is $499 and it is really a swap and you don't even get your files back or have any certainty that critical information is safeguarded (banking, tax returns, etc.), or buy a new one for $200 less? Well, I certainly won't buy another one and suffer through this again 18 months later.
Apple has not set up a data recovery service for users of failed Time Capsules to retrieve their data (backups and other files you may have stored there). Furthermore they are not owning up to the fact that it is a flawed design and hundreds if not thousands of them are failing prematurely all over the world. Apple could have put the power supply externally and cut down on the temperature rise, or improve the cooling and air flow, or both. It seems to be a case of aesthetics taking priority over robustness creating a highly unreliable product.
I chose to keep my Time Capsule and following the instructions kindly given by LaPastenague, I re-powered my Capsule with an external Cisco router power brick, modified the cooling and now I have my old 1 TB Time Capsule purring like a kitten and it barely feels warm. I figure my cost "out the door" for the re-powering and modifications was around $25 plus my time.

The wife just left the Apple Store (Schaumberg, IL). I was dealing with them from work on the phone after she got there. The guy on the other end said that they don't service TC's at all and buying another one was the only resolution. So I asked him why I would buy another if it would fail within the next 18 months, is this advertised as a disposable item? He hung up on me so I guess I have my answer. Here I thought they dealt with superior items with superior service. Wrong on both counts apparently.

Love Apple, have never had a problem until now. Called support and they told me to take it back to retailer...thanks.
Retailer says its no longer under warranty, need to buy a new one. For $600.00??? **** no!

Apple will not replace any of these time capsules without Applecare on a computer or the time capsule. This is ridiculous. I told them on the phone that they basically put a time bomb for these to die outside of warranty and he was just a smart *** that its impossible.

Don't get another one. It's not worth the money. Get a Linksys .11n Cisco wireless router and and a couple of external hard drives for backup they work just as well.
I had to crack open my dead TC, take the hard drive out and install it in an external bay.
Works perfectly and would have cost me alot less than the $499.00 plus tax and extended warranty that Apple will not honor.
If you really want one call Apple Care and if you have a computer that has AppleCare the TC is covered under it no matter what.
They'll send you a new one but won't get your information off of the old one for you.
The rep said, and I quote, "It's your responsibility to back up your back up."
Well, you shouldn't sell the TC as a "Server Grade" piece of hardware because $600.00 for 18 months is not the quality I expect from Apple.
I will never buy a TC again, but I will still buy Macs.

I had the same problem on mine. I unplugged it to take it to the Apple store and when I arrived hours later after dinner it booted up fine with no problems. It has not failed again since.
Maybe it is worth a try unplugging a "dead" one and letting it set for several hours?
I agree that it should be easy to exchange drives and migrate data from a "dead" time capsule.
