Unbelievable - New Mail sound still not working in Snow Leopard

The bug was in 10.5.x but it is still not fixed in Snow Leopard. When there is a new mail on an IMAP account there is no mail sound. Sound for incoming mails is selected (I can even hear it when I select it in the menu) and the volume of my Mac is on - but no sound.

Ouch.
I started getting the sound with 10.5.8. Did you have any luck with that version?

It's not a bug for everyone; I have long had sounds with Mail, and have been using IMAP for years. I had sounds for 10.5.x, and I have sounds in 10.6.

I think it has to do with whether you have enabled system sounds in general or not. I haven't, I only want new mails and errors to make a sound. Maybe when you enable all system sounds you even hear the mail sound.

No, no sound with 10.5.8. It got lost with 10.5.0 or some versions after 10.5.0 and never came back.

Strange: Every time I reboot my MacBook the sound is muted afterwards. Anybody else?

Go to your Mail Preferences Click on Accounts, then click the check box that says "Use IDLE command if the server supports it". Quit Mail and reload it and you should have sound. At least thats what worked for me.

Same problem. Really REALLY annoying. Going backwards with new update. Have people with this problem found that it is consistent or intermittent? (I have quietly gotten two new emails while typing this post.)

I have never found anything to tell me whether this is intentional or a bug. I do know that in normal course the new email alert does not happen until a cycle of checking for new mail is completed, and furthermore that with the IDLE command in use, the messages in the IMAP account come not as a result of checking for new mail, but rather are Pushed. So there may simply be an inevitable disconnect.

My IMAP mail NEVER plays new message sound (since installing 10.6). Not even after a cycle checking for new mail is complete. I never had this problem before and am so frustrated. Why is this only a problem for some people?

same here, i couldn't get a new mail sound. so i used growl mail in 10.5.8. and now? the growlmail plugin isn't compatible anymore! so now i don't have any mail sound at all...
