Poor performance on Snow Leopard
Posted: Aug 28, 2009 10:23 PM

So I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini which I use as a media center in my living room. So obviously I use Front Row extensively. Imagine my dismay to find out that front row is now jerky, sometimes won't respond, and in general *****. Videos play back jerky, and steppy as well while the same videos play find through Quicktime X or Quicktime 7, and iTunes full screen. What gives? Anybody else experiencing this? Any solutions?

I have this problem too.
As a Mini user, I like lying back on my bed with the remote and watching some DVDs but the playback on Snow Leopard is not pleasant at all. All fine with DVD player and VLC Media Player on full screen but Front Row is definitely a no go. At first I thought it was the DVD with problems but everything else plays fine.
You are not the only one with this problem and I have yet to find no solutions.
Please get this fixed Apple!

PS: It WAS smooth on Leopard, it's not like I haven't used Front Row to play DVDs before.

Interestingly, this problem only appears on my MacMini, but my MacBook Pro appears to play back video content fine on my MacBook Pro.

I am experiencing the exact same problem with my Mac Mini. Just curious, how much memory are you guys running on your Mac Minis? Mine just has a gig.

I'll add to this list. DVD playback and even VIDEO_TS folder playback is terrible through Front Row on a Mac Mini 2.0 with the Intel GPU.

It's worse than in Leopard, which wasn't particularly great anyway.

I do hope Apple find a fix, it's kind of ruined my Home Theatre PC experience.

I'll throw in to this topic. I have a 2 year old MacBook and was thinking maybe it was related to the 64-bit system? Maybe my graphics card isn't the best it could be for a 64-bit system?

Same problem here with MacBook White. I use 20" Cinema Display for movies and under SL it's awful.

Same here. The Mini is our media centre and was working flawlessly until we installed Snow leopard. We are experiencing the exact same issues others have mentioned. It's disappointing.

Is playback jerky only for DVDs or are AVIs and MP4s also playing back poorly?

For me it is only DVDs and DVD rips (VIDEO_TS) folders. I guess that points to an MPEG2 decoder that is poorly implemented in Front Row.

To be fair, Front Row wasn't that cracking for PAL DVDs in Leopard, but it was markedly better than the poor effort in Snow Leopard.

All of my TV shows and movies are either bought from the iTunes store (protected mp4), or my own content ripped with Hand Brake (also mp4), and this has very poor playback performance, stuttery and jerky. I have not tried a DVD yet. This same content will play back fine in full screen from iTunes, or opening with Quicktime. It's definitely a problem with Front Row only.

Same here on our Mini as well. Installed Snow Leopard on our MacBookPro, and tested front row with various .avi's and .mov's, (everything looked fine, never once thought to test dvd playback, was more suspicious of the various files Perian would assist with) Once I confirmed those played, I prepared and then started the update on the mini in our living room this afternoon.

Ran across this thread and others while it was installing, when browsing the web in anticipation of the new install. Expected to just see folks posting about small improvements in feel and response. We use the mini has the home theater, and really love it. Needless to say, Front Row was the appeal. Really hope Apple can address this issue, rolling back to 10.5 would not be fun.

How do you submit a bug report? I am more than willing to add my report to the pile if you can point the way.

Thanks,

Adam3

We should try to see if we can narrow down the problem.

So far we know it affects both DVDs and AVIs. Are only Mac Minis affected? If so, which models?

We should also try removing all Quicktime plugins and then seeing if Front Row's performance improves.

Try Front Row with and without Quicktime 7 installed.

Try Front Row with DivX 7 installed, but not Perian. Then vice versa.

And try using the avc1Decoder instead of Perian for MP4 playback.
