QuIcktime X does not support the .qtl media link format?
Posted: Aug 29, 2009 11:17 AM

In the past I have been able to view NASA TV with Quicktime. I just go to the site and click the Quicktime link... I found out last night when I upgraded to Snow Leopard's QT X that the .QTL format used to connect to streaming Quicktime media no longer works...

What is the deal with that? QTL is a Quicktime format correct? It this just an outdated format?

Edit: I had to use RealPlayer instead. Yikes!

Install QuickTime 7.6.x to view those .qtl files.
It's found in the optional installs folder of the snow Leopard DVD.
BTW, the .qtl files do not stream. They download.

I can reproduce this problem and installing Quicktime 7 from the optional installs in the DVD does not address the problem. QTL files can be used for streaming - the user downloads the qtl file which contains a link to an rtsp stream which then opens in the player.

http://developer.apple.com/legacy/mac/library/documentation/QuickTime/QT4WebPage/samplechap/special-11.html

This is described here and has worked forever. We use this to provide an open stream in Quicktime option in our software product - which does not work in snow leopard.

This appeares to be a major Bug and loading the Quicktime 7 from the install disk does not fix the problem. I cannot view any of the movie trailers from the Yahoo Movies site.

Is there any fix?

How do you set the system or browser ( I use firefox ) to load *.qtl files with quicktime 7 by default insted of Quicktime 10 which will simply give you an error saying it does not support the file type???

Thanks...

I found that you have to change the preference settings in Firefox...

Go to Preferences->Applications->QuickTime Player Movie

Then select Quicktime7 and not Quicktime from the drop down list.

This causes the browser to try to open the .qtl files in the 7 player and not in the Quitctime X ( or 10 )

Seems to work fine now....

This is a workaround, not a solution:
First way:
1) Install QuickTime 7 from the Snow Leopard DVD. This places QT Player 7 in the Applications/Utilities folder
2) Download any .qtl file
3) Cntrl-click (right click) on the .qtl, choose Open With -->Other-->QuickTime player 7 (from the Utilities folder)
4) Click the "Always open with" button

Second way:
1) Install QuickTime 7 from the Snow Leopard DVD. This places QT Player 7 in the Applications/Utilities folder
2) Download any .qtl file
3) Do "Get info" on the .qtl file
4) Do Open with-->Other-->QuickTime Player 7 (from Utilities)
5) Click the Change All button in the Get Info pane

What I did for NASA TV at least was just open the qtl file in textmate and grabbed the url of the stream and pasted it the open url of quicktime X. Works fine but I agree this should be fixed.

This works - but this is too complicated for end users to have to do. Like I say we produce a software product which allows users to click a link in a web page and have a streaming link open in quicktime player (not in the browser). This functionality is no longer possible with an out of the box configuration of snow leopard.

Yep.
The .qtl file is just fancy "text" and any text editor can view them.

Yes--I agree that this is definitely not for Joe or Jane User. My problem is that we use .qtl to touch off streaming for both internal (we can set the machines up with the workaround) and external (we don't even know who they are) viewers. We are not even beginning to deploy 10.6, but we have no control over what others are using.

This is a very large issue. I've reported it, and I'm hoping others have as well. I'm a little stunned that this was released this way.

i may be in over my head here -- but when you get a more recent version of a program shouldn't it work better than the prior version?
maybe that's oversimplifying it...but i had a feeling it was the new version of quicktime stopping me from being able to play .qtl files from a course webpage (webct)....what a pain...
so if i understand you guys correctly the smart thing to do would be to put back in the leopard cd and somehow ask it to install quicktime 7? and this won't delete the new version?
why can't i just download quicktime 7 from the web? ex.CNET or something? is there some disadvantage to that?
(i have the cd, but being a novice.... i'm wary of screwing with OS configuration....)

Here's some instructions I found on another post which seem fairly straightforward.

To install QT7 without reinstalling Snow Leopard:

1. Insert your Snow Leopard Disc.
2. Browse the contents of that Disc and you'll find a folder titled "Optional Installs".
3. Click on the package that is located in the Folder
4. Before you hit "Install", make sure to click the "Customize" button to select which file that you wish to Reinstall.

You should even be able to have this window open while you're going through the steps just to make sure you can follow along. Come back and leave another post if you have any problems with it.

No.
The .qtl file will always download. The QuickTime file linked inside the .qtl file can be served from streaming servers or over HTTP.
