iDVD 7.0.4 Crashing in Snow Leopard
Posted: Aug 30, 2009 8:09 PM

Hi,

I've been trying to burn a project in iDVD that I made from iMovie, and iDVD is crashing when i go to burn it to DVD.

I've also posted this same question here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2135790&tstart=0)

Any help would be great.

I've also noted on the Snow Leopard compatibility list (http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/) that iDVD is listed as 'unknown'... does anybody know why this is??

How much free space do you have on your hard drive? You should have at least 20 GB free in order for iDVD to work properly.

If free space is not an issue, give this basic remedy a try. Quit iDVD and delete your iDVD preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.idvd.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iDVD; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.

Do a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.

If this does not solve the problem, try to create and burn the project from another account. If things work properly, then the issue is within your account. If iDVD doesn't work from the different account, you might have to do a reinstall.

I hope this helps.

Currently have 41.2GB free on my hard drive.

Will try what you've suggested, and see what happens!!

Thanks.

Were you able to burn the project again successfully? Does the crash happen with all projects you try to burn?

I'm having a similar issue. I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and iDVD is crashing randomly when working both with new projects and projects created before the upgrade. To address the suggestions others have made:

  • I have 70 GB free on my hard disk.
  • I tried deleting the preferences file.
  • I've tried running iDVD under another (newly made) account.

So far, no good.

I'm going to try a verify and repair permissions to see if that helps.

I'm also now having an issue with iDVD 7.0.4 and Snow Leopard. I can't even get iDVD to open before it crashes.

Individuals who are experiencing this problem should send a report to Apple.

Had the same problem (and filed a report)

This seemed to fix:

Delete the idvd prog and the 2 linked preference files and then reinstall off the ilife disc

iDvd now makes menus and appears to work fine - however it crashed again 5mins into coding a file

We deleted the plist file for iDVD (User/Libraries/Preferences) then repaired permissions using the disk utility. This solved the problem for us.

10.6, and 10.6.1 Crashed when trying to render the menu system.

I have 200GB free, so it's not a HD space issue.

I havent tried the 'fixes' yet, and plan on waiting till Apple comes up with an update to fix this issue.

iDVD is totally unusable on 10.6 for us as well. Crashes randomly throughout and every time during a final output to DVD discs.

And every time it crashes, we get the "report to Apple" form so they must be getting a lot of these and should be working on a fix....<crossing fingers>.

Update:

OK...I did several more tests and FINALLY got a DVD to burn without crashing. I had to change the encoding quality to BEST PERFORMANCE and then waited until all my clips fully encoded in the background before clicking the Burn button.

I know this is lower quality video, but it finally worked. Using the other two quality settings always crashes. Again, Apple needs to fix this soon!!!

Yes, I've been fighting with this with no success. I've tried just about everything. I've deleted every .plist file related to iDVD. I tried reinstalling iDVD and all that did was make it worse. I used to be able to at least open the program, now I cannot even do that.

I see no mention that iDVD issues will be addressed in 10.6.2 which is very disappointing.

So much for "it just works".

I know several people seem to be able to get it to work - in many cases by sacrificing quality - but there are clearly a lot of people who cannot use it at all. Very frustrating.
