Bug in Preview in Snow Leopard when opening multiple pdf files at once
Posted: Aug 31, 2009 5:25 PM

I receive 50-200 pdf files by e-mail each day. I have historically saved the pdf attachments to a folder, then selected all the pdf files in the folder (CMD A), then opened all the selected files in Preview (CMD O). After updating to Snow Leopard, downloading 34 pdf files to a folder, selecting them all, then attempting to open them all in Preview (using both CMD O, then File/Open, then File/Open With), the effort first opens 6 of the 34 files. Closing all then trying again results in 7 files being opened, closing all then trying again results in 8 files being opened, etc etc. Earlier today I had the same results, but eventually got a message asking if I wanted to open all in separate windows (I did) or a single window, and it opened all the files at once as I wanted. After shutting down, moving home, and receiving additional pdf files, however, back to the same open 5, then open 6, etc. problem. Anyone else having this problem or a suggestion on how to resolve?

Thanks for suggestions,

B

More info - apparently the bug isn't related to Preview, but to the attempt to open all pdf files in the folder with ANY program. After having Preview open 25 of the 34 files I was attempting to open, I then tried opening all 34 with Adobe Reader. It opened 26 (after Preview had opened 25). Tried again with Preview - it opened 27, then 28 with Adobe Reader. It doesn't necessarily open the FIRST 25 (or 26, etc) either, so it's difficult to work with the open ones, then go back and work with the remaining ones later.

I could guess it's a memory problem - you may not have enough since SL now requires at least 1 GB. Or I could guess it's a problem with the Leo system you upgraded. Hard to say exactly what the issue would be. I just tried opening 36 PDF files located randomly across my hard drive, and Preview did not crash or generate any errors. I'm running right now from a FireWire drive connected to a CoreDuo 2006 MBP w/2 GBs RAM.

Don't think it's memory, I'm running 4 GB. I selected 70 pdf files from a previously saved folder and Preview opened all 70 with no problem. Seems to be related to trying to open a large batch that I just downloaded from e-mail attachments (i.e., files that I've never opened before). Don't seem to have a problem opening any number of files if they've previously been opened.

Thanks for trying, I'll keep poking at it.

I went to the first place I could think of that had lots of PDFs to download, irs.gov.

I started with four, then tried nine new ones. All opened almost instantly. No issues.

I then tried to open all 13. Saw the same thing you describe. Very strange.

What options have you guys tried in Preview preferences: General / When opening files?
I tried all three and they all opened.
Over 20 so far are fine...

I tried them all.

After opening the first time, did you try again?

As in, opening, closing opening, or opening, quitting, opening?
Done all I can think of...

I think the bug may actually be related to Finder. If I select all files in a Finder window, then use "Command O" to try to open them, I get the error noted above. However, if I go to Preview and select File/Open then select all files in the same folder, they all open at once just fine, no matter how many are in the folder. Same with Adobe Reader (though it's limited to opening 50 files at once regardless).

All of mine that were already on the system opened fine. It was just the new ones I downloaded to test out the theory.

Just downloaded some and it's the same.
Not sure what's up with your system.

And it's not just PDF's in Preview.

I've got a folder full of jpeg's, and selecting a bunch (more than 5), and opening them with Preview via the Control Click Open With Preview..... it doesn't work as it should.

Something is wrong.
