no tethering on officially unlocked iPhone

I have an officially unlocked iPhone 3G (got it at Vodafone without any contracts and not locked to any sim). And currently, i'm using it on a different 3g carrier which does not provide iphones. after the initial upgrade to 3.0, internet tethering didn't appear in the options. only after i installed a mobile config, i was able to tether. my carrier doesn't have any problems with tethering, and even sells 3g usb dongles just for data usage.
My question is the following: will i loose the ability to tether after upgrading to 3.1?

Same here.
I also have a factory unlocked 3G with no tethering in 3.1
The contract with my provider has a special data option who allows me to use the iphone with tethering. But in 3.1 it´s gone....
I think a factory unlocked iPhone should have no limitations.

Exactly, that was one of the reasons i got a factory unlocked one too - to make sure that I could legally get all the downloads and without having to worry about broken functionality and to use the network of my choice.
Does anybody have a workaround for this?

Not at every time. Only with provider locked phones.
With factory unlocked phones it is a thing that is provided from apple.

I have the same issue here. I have an unlocked iphone without any binding contract with any carrier and the tethering is not available with my provider even if from the provider point of view it should be.
I think that apple should provide a solution to that

Apple gave you an explanation or a reason for not helping you with this?

Sorry. No explanation.
They told me that ALL provider worldwide would have tethering disabled. So Apple can´t do anything.
But why unlocked phones can´t tether? No answer....

This os a shame! Even my very old Nokia can do tethering. The problem is apple for no reason no longer allows the user to set the right settings for tethering to work. I'm very disappointed and if not fixed, I will sell my free iPhone and never buy from apple again. Since a 600€ cell should be able to do things a 50€ cell can for years!

I have an italian factory unlocked iphone. Tethering is gone with 3.1 an i need it for my macbook. My provider allows tethering an i got an flatrate for internet.
Apple can kill them for provider subsidize iphones, but not for 600€ unlocked ones.
This *****.

I dont know if it helps any of you, but i have a 3GS on AT&T, i had previously installed the mobileconfig profile to allow me to use tethering (albeit without & support) anyways, after upgrading my phone to 3.1, I still have access to that mobileconfig as well as my tethering. My suggestion to you would be to call the service provider you plan to use the phone with and ask them for a link to get a new mobileconfig file that ought to allow you the use of tethering again. If this route doesn't work, i suggest a google search (from iphone preferably so the file can be directly downloaded)

my carrier doesn't care for my iphone at all, so calling them for a mobileconfig is just useless. i tried to install a mobileconfig again from a well know website for this and the mobile profile got installed. it appears in the general settings pane, but the option for internet tethering is still not available.
when i just updated to 3.1 - the internet tethering option was still visible UNTILL I tried to enable it, then it just disappeared - you're really lucky that yours still works!!!
