Update 3.1 Turned my iPhone into a Brick
Posted: Sep 9, 2009 4:47 PM

I have the current Mac OS X 10.6 and iTunes 9.0, went to update my iPhone 3G to 3.1 and now my phone is useless. Tried all the tips on tech support with no luck. iPhone stays in recovery mode. I get error codes 2006, 1611, and 26 during different attempts to recover and restore.

Any suggestions?

I'm in the same situation. I've been able to restore back to 3.0, but trying to update to 3.1 gets the iPhone stuck in recovery mode every time.

Well guys I got it to finally update. I had to go to my wife's computer (iMac OS X 10.5, iTunes 8) and restore it to original firmware. It took a couple of tries. Then went to my computer and restored from back up. Now 3.1 installed and working fine.

Hope this helps you guys out.

Same issue for me. Upgraded to iTunes 9 this afternoon, updated my iPhone software for a 3G, now it's totally useless -- in a loop of iPhone in "restore mode," but updating the software fails.

My 3g iPhone is currently inoperative, a brick.

Same with me, but I was able to restore the phone and now I'm restoring from the backup and it looks like it's working - updating the apps at the moment.

Same here, 3.1 bricked my iPhone. I have tried all of the suggestions, none of them worked, including using my wifes computer to restore. I hate to not have my phone tomorrow for work.

What does the restore screen look like? I am trying to update to 3.1 but it has been sitting in the same position for a few hours with no success. What should I do? All I see is a progress bar in iTunes 9 and on my phone. Help!

I, too, have the same problem! When I downloaded the new software, it said verifying update with Apple, and never made any progress. I tried it a couple of times, and then I got the iTunes connect screen, but when I try and restore - nothing. It's a brick!

This is nonsense! I need a working phone tomorrow. I guess I should have come here first!

Yep, I tried to upgrade to 3.1 also and now am the proud owner of an expensive doorstop. Does Apple ever test these upgrades? They must, but it sure makes you wonder when so many people have the same problem with the same software.
