3.1 -- Unresponsive iPhone?
Posted: Sep 9, 2009 7:44 PM

I did the 3.1 update around noon today, and since then I've had my phone become unresponsive 4-5 times.

Basically, it will sleep (or I'll lock it), and then that's it, it won't respond to any input or display anything. Home and sleep buttons don't work, silence, etc.. The only thing that works is to hold down home and sleep for 10 seconds and hard reboot it. Also odd is that it still seems to be doing... something. I can call the phone and it behaves as if it's ringing, not as if it's turned off.

Anyone else seen this or have any ideas on how to fix it? Just now did the restore from backup, so hopefully that takes care of it....

Mine has been doing the EAXCT same thing.

After the 3.1 update. It's done it three times. The phone will be completely unresponsive to any input. Home button, On/Off button, Volume, Vibrate Switch....nothing. Have had to do a hard reboot every time, and it gets the phone back up and running.

Hope this gets fixed soon.

I restored from backup, and through 4-5 hours of use I haven't seen it again. Not sure if that fixed it or if I just haven't seen it yet. Let us know if the genius has any useful advice.

Just happened again to me.

I right-clicked on my iphone and selected "restore from backup". I noticed that it did not have to copy back over any of my apps or music. I thought that before when I had to restore it had to copy all of that stuff back over. Are there different ways to restore?

Not sure. I'm not really much of a computer expert and have never had to restore the iphone. I guess i'll just have to deal with this issue until tomorrow night when I go to the genius bar...

I was facing the same issue. I tried leaving connection to my home wireless network and my phone didnt go unresponsive whole night. morning i joined the wireless network again and with 30 mins the phone went unresponsive. I also tried by disabling the wireless totaly on the phone and it didnt go in unresponsvice state yet. not sure if this is really a workaround which might resolve the problem.

OK, So I have had a similar problem since I installed the 3.1 update yesterday. My iPhone, which has a fully-charged battery, will randomly shut down by itself. The screen goes totally black, and it doesn't respond or even appear in iTunes when I plug it into the computer. The only way to get it back on is to hold both buttons down for 20-30 seconds and then the apple logo appears and it reboots. Anyone know why this is happening?

EXACT same situation with me (iPhone 3G, OS 3.1). It's very jarring to not have the thing respond to any button presses (except a hard reset). I thought it might be because my computer inadvertently shut down during the update. I restored and re-synced and everything seemed to work until the phone became unresponsive a few hours later. It's happened 3 or 4 times so far.

I also have this exact same problem.

Phone is warm and completely unresponsive to anything other than hard reset.

I have the exact same issue. The only way I can get back up is doing a hard reset. This is very frustrating.

My 3G is doing the exact same thing. It has made my phone almost unusable at this point. At least 5 times today it went completely unresponsive and the only way to get it to come back on was to do a hard reset after holding the home and power buttons. I have now tried twice to restore the phone to 3.0.1 and it failed both times giving me 'unknown errors'. This is VERY frustrating. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS!

take out sim card put it back in. If that doesn't work try plugging your iphone into your computer, turn on iTunes. Hold the home and lock buttons until the apple sign appears. Once that happens let go of the lock button but keep holding the home button. That should force restore the phone through iTunes.
