Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update
Posted: Sep 10, 2009 7:44 AM

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Same issue for me. After updating to 3.1 iPhone randomly shuts down.

It happened several times today and each time I had to hard reset it.

It always happens after I manually lock the phone or it times out and locks on its own.

All in all quite annoying and doesn't seem like an issue were restoring and reapplying the update would help, though I might try it in case Apple doesn't issue a fix.

Same thing has happened to me 5 times, restore has not helped. I am using the iPhone and everything seems fine. I lock it, then go to use it again either a few minutes or longer and it just doesn't respond at all. Screen doesn't turn on; nothing. Have to reset it and it comes back to life. Haven't been able to isolate it to an app yet or any other function. Also happens randomly. Last night it happened 4 times within 20 minutes. Happened one time this morning and it's been fine since.

Same here. I upgraded my 3G to software 3.1 last night. Right at the upgrade onset I got the 2006 error that required a reload of iPhone OS, then I restored all my content. Went to bed, it worked fine for about 4 hours this morning and as of about an hour ago, it shuts down after about 5 minutes of inactivity. I then have to hold down home and the wake/sleep button for 10 secs to make it reboot.

Same problem here and no clue. Actually, I don't think it shut downs, gets stuck because of the hard reset we need to do.

I have been having the same problem, over and over, since I updated yesterday. Has anyone called Apple support?

I haven't, my guess is they're swamped with problems with this update. I'm going to try to wipe all of the apps off, then restore the os then re-install all of the apps. No guarantees but I'm hoping this will help. I have noticed that virtually everyone that has posted has a 3g, not the S.

This is a thread in the 3G hardware forum. There is a similar (but not identical) thread in the 3GS hardware forum.

I am just restoring from initial upgrade and hope I don't have the mysterious random shut down described above!

i am having the same problems. my phone has shut off/stopped responding 2x since the 3.1 update.

hard reboot has fixed the problem both times, although the 1st time i restarted, it wouldnt ever find AT&T's signal, so i had to restart again and it worked.

froze again today, but it found AT&T when i restarted.

Good call. We found out a long time ago that if you see anything 'unusual' then the first stop is a 'hard reset' (Home and Sleep/Wake buttons ignoring everything until the Apple logo appears) which seems to have addressed every issue for us surrounding updates, rogue apps and other poor memory usage (showing as very high 'Other' when synching).

Hoping that others have the same positive experiences.... Good luck!
