iPhone 3G w/ OS 3.1 - Problems (Slow operation)
Posted: Sep 11, 2009 7:31 AM

I have the same problem. I upgraded to the 3.1 OS from 3.0.1. My iPhone 3G is not unlocked or jailbroken. After the update, the phone's functionality slowed severely. Pressing the home button, side scrolling to other home screens, placing calls, and internet connectivity all were severely slowed down.

I have iTunes 9.0 installed on a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I then, restored the phone using the iPhone restore option and then restored using last saved backup. No improvement.

I then decided to restore to full factory settings again and setup the phone as new. Some improvement noted, but as soon as I started installing apps again the slow response (in all the aspects above), returned.

I have one of the (recently removed) free memory apps, MemoryInfo, and it seems the phone on its idle state is using above 95% of the total memory. I did also notice severe battery usage, after just 2hrs of idling the phone the battery drained to 65%.

Apple Engineers - If you do read this, please issue a patch for OS 3.1 or allow us to downgrade to OS 3.0.1 until this problem is resolved.

Thank you.

After update to OS 3.1 The incredibly slow back-up is back. It took my iPhone fifty (50) minutes to backup 3.4 gigs! Not to mention 3 system crashes in 8 hours that only can be resolved by hard reboot. WE NEED A FIX. PLEASE!

Same problems here. Increased battery usage, system crashes and slow backup. Right after upgrading.

I too am experiencing extremely slow response on my 3GS. Swiping the unlock often has no feedback until the phone is unlocked. Pressing the home button when the phone is sleeping appears not to wake the phone for 5 seconds or so.

I have the same problems after upgrading to OS 3.1 on my iPhone 3GS: Very slow backup; the phone's wifi crashes; battery is powering down very fast. I agree with the others - help us figure out how to downgrade or provide the bugfixes FAST.

Same probs here. I also have had issues with slow response when typing in apps, text messages, and almost any email. Right now I'm getting lag while I type this. It hasn't been this slow ever. I also her freak outs where the touchscreen doesn't do what it is supposed to do. This is bad I want to go back to 3.0.1. Help apple this is a bad update. I try shutting down and restarting that doesn't help. Super slow reaction to the password enter and the slide bar. Driving me nuts.

i have the same problem too...if phone go to sleep itself, it will take about 5 sec to wake it up after pressing the power button. my Wifi improve a bit though, it wasn't connected to my uni network automatically but now it does.

agreed with some above say, apple should make a downgrade available until they find a solution.

hope this can be solved soon.

I too am having the same issues with my 3G after applying the 3.1 update. The long delay when starting from standby is quite annoying, but doesn't happen all the time. As many others have reported, the wifi has also become very unreliable on certain access points, but still works fine on others. I do wish I'd never installed the update now, as 3.01 was fine and had none of these problems. I suspect apple has changed the way data is cached in RAM with this update, and it has resulted in more swapping at certain times (especially on 3G models where there is only 128MB od RAM). I'm going to live with it for a while before trying all the "factory restore" solutions, as I have a lot of settings/app data that I don't have the time to reconfigure right now. Hopefully apple will pinpoint the problem and issue a patch that doesn't call for a full device wipe.

First time I've ever had an issue with a firmware update, so I was quite surprised at these issues, but I guess it was gonna happen sooner or later. Still love the phone though, and hasn't put me off the product.

I too can confirm the behaviour under 3.1 on a 3G where pressing the home button when the iPhone is sleeping will result in a delay of a few seconds before the phone wakes.

I've also had a case where on 2g or 3g the phone has failed to access the data network despite showing fullsignal strength. Required a reboot to restore the functionality.

Like all here, I am looking forward to a fix

cheers

Same problem here. Found removing programs helps, and I've done a full restore from backup, again helped but both briefly before it slows again.

Answering calls and unlocking are a real pain...

What with this and the early snow leopard bugs I think I going to knock this 'quick to update' strategy on the head.

I have had the same problem as well. I found that you can restore and/or reset the phone which seems to work initially, but then it goes back to the same ol' slowness.

The solution that has worked for me is to go in and manage the push notifications and push email. I turned off push notifications and changed push email to fetch except for what I really need. This made my phone work much smoother again. Is it the optimal thing to have to do...no...I want to be able to use push to its fullest, but I also don't want a laggy phone.

I hope this helps someone...

Same thing here.
No response after pressing the home button, then very shortly the unlock slider appears, then again disappears. Pressing home again then displays unlock and you work with the iPhone.
Data connections (all types: GPRS, 3G and Wifi) drop and the battery is empty within 5 to 6 hours.
A downgrade to 3.0.1 would really be pleasant at this moment, or some fixes.
I learned now that unless there is something I really want in a new firmware release, I'm not going to install it immediately, but wait a couple of days.

General sluggishness here after the update to 3.1 on a 3G. Many of the same symptoms, including very stuttery interface under normal operation.

iPhone 3G upgraded to 3.1 with iTunes 9 - experiencing extreme slowdowns and crashing. Additionally, the phone has shutdown multiple times automatically and restarts continuously when syncing.

Wifi signal strength has dropped, and battery life is decreasing much more rapidly than previously.

I find it very disappointing that this type of situation is occurring considering the sheer number of iPhone users around the world this potentially affects. I should know better than to be an early adopter, but really - should we have to fear such things at this stage in the life cycle of iPhone + iTunes?
