Flashing screen and then "Need to Restart" error
Posted: Sep 16, 2009 3:13 AM

I am travelling through Europe for several weeks and brought along my MacBook Pro. A few days ago I was in a hostel that was a wifi hotspot where you had to pay for a chunk of time and log in to use it. I bought some time and was on for about 10 minutes when my screen started flashing (the whole screen, not just one program) and not responding so I manually shut it off with the power button.

When I turned it back on I got the "You need to restart your computer" error. I then turned it off and turned it back on holding in command, option, P and R until it made the startup sound twice. It booted up and I was using it for about 10 or 15 minutes when the screen started flashing again, and the error returned.

I tried command-option-p-r again, several times, to no avail. I have a Windows partition on my Mac so I tried getting into that but it just froze on a dark blue screen for a few mintues until I manually shut it down. I tried booting it up again and it worked, then the screen started flashing again and I´m still getting the error and no amount of command-opt-p-r'ing seems to do anything.

I have no idea if the wifi hotspot has anything to do with it, I just automatically associated the problem with it since that's the only "new" thing I've done on my computer for quite some time. It has no new software, no new hardware, nothing has been changed in any of the settings as far as I know.

Is there an easy solution? I have not upgraded to Snow Leopard, so if I manage to get my computer to boot up again and install Snow Leopard, will it solve whatever crazy problem is going on with it? Or should I just wait until I get home to the US and take it into the Genius Bar and have them work their magic?

Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately it sounds like a hardware problem.
Do try to boot in safe mode - hold SHIFT while booting up. This will take a while but all sorts of tests are performed on safe boot.
Apple's warranty is an international one and you could try to get to the nearest Apple service centre.
Do you have your OS install disc with you?
