User profile reset?

When I logged into my MacBook Pro this morning, it was as if I had logged into my Guest Account and not my standard user profile. No icons on the desktop, the desktop wallpaper was the default "space" photo and not the one I had assigned, no documents in the docs folder, apps behaved as if I'd never opened them before.
Does anyone know what happened here? Is there any way to recover my old user profile info? I'm afraid I've lost some important documents here (emails, financial info, work, etc.), and not sure how to get it back.
Thanks.

Just a little more info in case it helps. I've got a Work profile, a Personal profile, and the standard Guest profile on the Macbook. The Work & Guest profiles seem to be fine. It's the Personal profile that seems to have crashed and reset itself.
Again, any ideas as to what's wrong (and more importantly, how to fix it) would be appreciated. Cheers.

Thanks for the info, V.K. ... this seems to be quite a nightmare I stumbled into.
I've tried backing some things up, but I'm probabl S.O.L. on any recent activity.
Cheers. (and YIKES.)

Just to gather a few more bits of info on this problem, do you have your account data on a separate partition to your OS? I noticed that someone else reporting a similar problem has this configuration.
Also, did you upgrade your existing installation, or was it a fresh install?
