Application icons disappear, then come back

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, my Application icons seem to lose their "cache" when I browse the folder in the Finder. Also, I had associated .txt files with Smultron and that association seems to be lost. I'm worried something else may be happening here. I've already repaired permissions on the start-up volume and it doesn't seem to have changed. Should I be concerned that something else is amiss here? Are there other things I can try?

I have no understanding of what you mean by your icons have lost their cache. Could you please explain what you mean by this?

Sure! Thanks for the response. Nearly every time when I go to the Applications folder, most of the icons have the A icon of a few tools that take a few seconds to show the actual icon. Then, as I scroll down in the Finder window, other icons are the same, showing the A and eventually showing the actual icon.

I'm having the same problem when I open my Application folder. Some icons start as generic and then change to their correct form within a few seconds.

Can anyone comment on whether or not this is something to be concerned about? Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard this didn't happened and I'm worried something may not be working properly.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but for me, the icons along the left side in the sidebar of the finder window such as documents, or movies, start to become generic over time and a restart brings them up again. I have no idea what's causing this and I don't see anything in Console that is helpful.

When I installed SL, suddenly the icons for Mail and Safari disappeared from my dock!
I tried to drag them back in from the applications folder, but they didn't appear.
This problem wasn't fixed when I installed the update for SL.
This is not the only problem I have with SL - my fonts have all changed and even when I changed the screen resolution, they look more fuzzy than before.

This occurs for me on occasion for the Open with... context menu, where the choices all have the generic application icon. Of course, a few minutes later, it resolves itself, no restart or log out needed.

I would be somewhat concerned. It sounds like your OS is working slowly. Have you noticed any general slowness?

Mine has been snappy, can't speak for the others. If I'm really impatient and demanding of these icons back, I can easily reload the Finder and they come right back.

this is also happening to me. when they re-draw and replace with the actual program's icon, it takes about 2 to 4 seconds to complete.

This also happens to me.
The generic Icons in the Applications-Folder are not as bad for me - they are redrawed pretty fast. But the generic icons in the "Open With"-menu won't be redrawed, even after 10 seconds of waiting.
Additional I have another icon-related problem that's annoying me the most: When opening the Downloads-Folder in Dock as a stack, there are also no icons shown. Only this dashed outline when Finder tries to make icon previews. But even after 10 seconds - no icons in the stack.

Since we are all having similar issues, I'd say to wait until 10.6.2 is released; if the bugs continue, then each should report them using Apple Bug Reporter (requires free Apple Developer Connection membership) at bugreport.apple.com
None of them seem to be showstoppers, but all can be annoyances, so bringing it to their attention is the best thing to do.
