Flash video causing 105% CPU usage spikes

Just got my 27" iMac plugged in (not quad core) software updated it, installed the latest flash player, and I go to youtube and all the videos play really jerky, with sound popping and stuff. So i opened activity monitor and flash player (only thing not running 64bit) is spiking to 105% CPU usage every few seconds. Its straight out of the box, haven't even installed a single app on it yet.
Anyone else having this issue?

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Bear with me here... you may have downloaded a corrupted file for Flash... try this. Uninstall the Flash plugin and reinstall a fresh copy.

When you are finished uninstalling the old Flash plugin, go here and install a fresh copy
of Flash Player plugin.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
As with any software installations, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Just got a brand new IMAC out of the box and it does the same thing. Not going to try and fix now as it is being returned for dust/specs behind the glass. I'll update tomorrow when I get another new one.

Things tried so far without luck:
- Uninstall and reinstall flash
- Repair Disk Permissions
- Unplug all USB devices and external drives
- Try on a new user account (same issue exists)
- Run Safari in 32bit mode
Other info
- Issue does not effect other video types, ie, quicktime, high def movie trailers
- When run in 64 bit mode, the FlashPlayer process (running in 32bit) 100%'s the CPU, but when safari's run in 32 bit mode, safari 100%'s the CPU.

Sometime between calling applecare and them not being able to find the issue, it just stopped happening. If anyone else has this issue, try rebooting into safeboot mode (hold shift on startup) and then reboot back into macos normally and see if that fixes the issue.

Tried the safemode trick -- seems to make small flash video workable, but in full screen mode video still flatlines my cpu at ~ 140%(!!).
Seems a little excessive. Surely if I had more programs running the video would likely be choppy again. Anyone have any idea how to get flash under control on the new iMacs?

Narrowed down the problem further. After a reboot, everything runs fine, but if your computer sleeps and the hard drive spins down, then the problems start, and dont seem to be fixed until you reboot next.
Any fixes Apple support ppl? Applecare line in my country's closed until the morning

I confirm - Brand new 27" iMac - had same Flash problem. Tried your solution - worked!! Thanks. My CPU instantly calmed down. Go figure. I've been trying everything else for two days, since I got this iMac...

Same here. Just tried it with a choppy video. Hitting the power button fixed it, even in full screen mode.
Obviously this is not acceptable long-term... Any ideas what's actually going on under the hood?

Yes! I am having the same exact problem. I am really needing a long term fix for this problem as I use it for my business and i was going to buy about 5 more of these 27" computers for my photography business but not if they are going to keep acting like this.
Does anyone, or Apple do you have a long term permanent fix for this problem? or should I just return my 27" and exchange for another one?

I've currently got an open applecare support case, and i'd urge everyone who's having this problem to use your complimentary 90 days of applecare and ring them up. At very least it'll alert them that the problem is widespread (when i rang up they hadn't had any similar complaints yet).
Sadly applecare in NZ is closed until tuesday
